6 – “In 2002 I had a lengthy conversation with Jessica Harkness.” Gerry Feltus.

(1) ‘She continually diverted the topic from the subject in question.’

(2) ‘I formed the opinion she was evasive.’

(3) ‘I formed the opinion she did not wish to talk about it.’

(4) ‘She did not have a copy of the Rubaiyat.’

(5) ‘She said it was a book of love poems.’

(6) ‘She did not know why it was significant.’

(7) ‘She did not remember Alf Boxall.’

(8) ‘I mentioned that she gave police his name and address when they first spoke to her.’

(9) ‘At a later date I had a further discussion with her that produced nothing of any significance.’

Taken from page 179 – The Unknown Man. Gerry Feltus.

Then there’s this, same page:

(10) ‘She did say that about 20 years ago at another address she had a visit from the police.’

(11) ‘She said she did not know anything then, and she did not know anything now.’

So, if GF spoke to this witness, why didn’t he raise this issue again with the police? It would seem that O’Doherty’s report didn’t travel very far-was it too much effort for the police to question the witness?

    • O’Doherty’s report landed on the desk of the Adelaide CIB Chief in 1959 … that would be a numbered manila folder with the signed statement inside. Trying to track that particular item down may not have been something GF signed up for.

So, Jessie was visited by the police in 1982, the same year that Ina Harvey entered the arena-a coincidence?

    • The fellow Harvey described sounded like a well-mannered, softly spoken sober sort of fellow who ‘didn’t mangle the King’s English’ and was kind enough to leave her a gift before departing in a crestfallen state.
Who does that remind you of?

TK, who was found dead in his hotel room, just a couple of mins walk from Ina’s hotel. Makes me wonder if TK had arranged to meet the SM, but it was too late?

    • They did meet, Clive, both shared a coldroom at the morgue. What is unproved and most disturbing is the thought that TK may have viewed SM’s body beforehand.

I suppose you could say that they were both ‘dead on time’. Yes, I suppose that TK may have seen a photo, of the SM. in a Melbourne paper & headed to Adelaide. Viewing the body confirmed his worse fears? Strange that TK wasn’t buried until Feb 1949, when the Coroner signed off his death cert. and gave the ok for his burial.

Coroner signed the papers only a couple of days after TK’s death.

  6. Two TK’s, colleagues, both in Adelaide to harvest some confidential information obtained from the ‘vast’ Salisbury weapons development project. Then put Tibor on top of the steps on November 30.

I wonder if that’s the reason GC raised the matter of why the photo of the SM was ‘re-constructed’ per ‘The Advertiser” and TK was the fall guy?

Then we have Paul Lawson, interviewed by Stuart Littlemore, trying not to be drawn on individuals who he thought, having looked at the SM, knew more than they were prepared to say. If only the police had a record of who/when they viewed the SM.

So…While we wait…A question that I have deliberated for many years…Do we have any proof that “Jessica Ellen” was a “Harkness” by birth? I have searched everywhere for confirmation of such and have found nothing.

2 things strike me out of those:
    7) She said she didn’t remember Boxall – this seems more than a tad odd to me. It was literally her first thought when the fuzz came a knocking at the time, but she hadn’t spent any time musing about it since then?
    10) She did say that about 20 years ago at another address she had a visit from the police – maybe that’s a messed up memory and she remembers the doco coming knocking. Or perhaps Littlemore had asked the coppers for detail, and rather than pass on her details, they went to her asking whether they could put Littlemore in contact…
