Kereru means wood pigeon and is the most common Maori name. My personal AI adviser doesn’t have a clue about Ms. Naomi Keruru’s upbringing, though everything points to Adelaide and not New Zealand which is a pity, or is it?
Thanks Gordon @ Anon. for reminding us of yesterday’s news re Naomi Keraru’s appointment as a replacement for Frank Whittle. Looks as if he’s been demoted back to SM ranks and no wonder, all the good he’s failed to achieve in his seven year stint as SA’s Coroner.
Bachelor of arts, commerce and management … I knew a lot of small business accountants with the same basic credentials .. and not a lot of them knew how to read a balance sheet.
The Thomson’s were advertising in”The Advertiser” as of 22 & 26 July 1947, from the Belair address. So, between end of July and October 1947 that’s when they must have moved to Glenelg.
As far as I know you can still do a free property title search in the Lands Titles Office in Adelaide. All land title registrations are on a computer now, but all the old records are in the old Register Books and entries were made manually with pens and stamps by the Registrar-General or those delegated to. I have had to search through many of them in years past.
The Certificate of Title document is duplicated. The owner of the land was meant to hold one, the duplicate, but the banks held that duplicate until the mortgage was discharged, then gave it to the land owner. If you owned your home outright you held the CT yourself, in a safe place. The CT has all the details for mortgages, leases, caveats, etc.
The original Certificates of Title are bound in giant Register Books and must be retained in the Lands Titles Office as absolute proof of who has the title to each bit of land.
You search for 90A Moseley Street Glenelg and see who was there and when, and in particular in 1947. You can get a photocopy of that for a fee. You can see when Thomsons held the title, and who actually held it, him, or her, or both as joint tenants or tenants in common.
The Current Certificate of Title reference is CT 5822/810. You just look for that and trace it back by the references to the earlier CT’s that are for 1947.
The little old ladies next door may have held the title if P&J were always on the move and paying rent. P put a lot down as business premises over the times in Carrum, Chelsea, Elsternwick, Medindie etc but 90A didn’t have a garage.
The Certificate of Title for 13 Alta Mira Crescent Belair is CT 5328/557 which for those not familiar is Volume 5328 Folio 557. Trace it back to the CT number in 1947
Noisy right next to the main trainline on that bend
What could be interesting is how their property titles were held and registered up to 1950, her being a de facto and using the name Thomson, and not married to him until then.
You might be able to get a historic listing of owners going back, but you need to pay for that, and it may not go back as far as 1947, so just head to the Lands Titles Office and search the old Register Books
Maybe the word “Sister” in the phone book qualified the premises for business consideration. J did a lot of in home nursing (as in other people’s in home).
A woman can only register a land title in a surname or name that is her current, legally recognized identification name, not an informal de facto partner’s surname
So until copies of the LTO CT’s are actually produced, there is no evidence of properties they owned, or being transferred from P to J.
Anyway, get a copy of the CT for that era from the LTO, which shows the legal ownership back then and dates of transfers etc
De facto names can’t be used as far as I know because if it is a joint tenancy and she died, he would need to lodge the Application to Register Death form in the LTO to be entered on the CT to take survivorship on the title, and would need her death certificate attached, and I can’t see how that would be done if she is still Harkness
7 years is an odd number

On 4 October 1947, CCH Somerton advertised for a nursing sister, Advertiser p.16, apply to the Matron
On 18 October 1947, Thomsons were at 90A Moseley St Glenelg, phone X3239, Advertiser p.20
Can’t quite correlate those dates with their move from Alta-Mira Cres Belair to Glenelg but something might surface
Says in some references they bought 90A Moseley St just before 18 October 1947
