Cramer sows seeds of doubt ..

Gordon Cramer is sowing grave doubts about the connection between the hair removed from the bust and the consequent identification of the Somerton Man as being Carl Webb. Grave doubts. His main thrust targets both Professor Abbott and the decayed state of the hairs affixed to the bust; whether they were slightly orange or slightly brown, whether were they affected by whatever Paul Lawson was using in his work or by the embalming or storage processes. However Cramer seems to have ignored Colleen Fitzpatrick’s contribution, which is not surprising given the weight of her many successes and the respect she is held in due to her experience in using forensic genealogy to identify bodies.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colleen_M._Fitzpatrick

It would take a very brave man to dispute her findings, particularly by one who has no expertise in her chosen field, which is what Cramer appears to be doing albeit indirectly. In fact I can remember some time ago when Cramer reported that the establishment employing Fitzpatrick was going under, hoping no doubt to tarnish her successes with an alleged, fast fading enterprise.

Then there is the solid link between Webb and the three articles labelled Kean(e) found amongst his belongings. Cramer appears to be at a loss as to explain away this evidence, other than to suggest everything found in the suitcase was ‘litter’.

Cramer appears to have only one target in his sights, Derek Abbott, who in his view is the weakest link. Fitzpatrick and Kean(e), the strongest, remain outside the scope of his arguments.

However there remains the view that Charles Carl Webb was wrongly identified as the Somerton Man and who was in fact Charles Richard Webb .. this is disputed by Stuart Webb, who unfortunately has absented himself from any further discussion.

While admitting I haven’t read Cramer’s latest (in fact I haven’t read anything from him for a loooooong time), but I think you can cast into doubt the origin of the hair without necessarily challenging Fitzpatrick’s work.

The other evidence is sort of interesting, and we (or some part of “we”) seem to have made all sorts of connections that on the face of it are consistent with a Webb connection, but I suspect we would have found a whole host of apparent connections with any plausible identification of SM.

I’d almost go as far as to say I think it’s worth continuing speculation/research into alternate identities and theories (perhaps not Fed) while there’s no confirmation that the body at West Tce was a Webb (and there are some who would suggest that at that point we need to decide whether the bod(ies/y) on the beach ended up in that plot at West Tce – and if we’re going that rabbit hole, maybe there’s a broader “chain of evidence” question around the photos and bust etc [I personally don’t subscribe to these ideas, but some have made *reasonable* cases for different aspects of them]).

Perhaps at this point we need to give a nod to NP (I think) who at some stage highlighted that the more we know the less we realise we know – and I think even predicted that no matter how this matter tries to resolve there will always be people supporting other theories and finding explanations on why any official narrative is wrong…..

Carl Webb as Somerton man is based on an assumption that because Carl Webb wasn’t buried anywhere and can’t be traced and shows no date of death on Australian records then it must be him

But in that era one way to get overseas if you had no money was to hitch a ride on a tramp steamer. Hippies were doing it in the ’60’s. The ports were open, walk along the wharf, where ya heading? Singapore, come on up. You didn’t need a passport, just hop off the ship when it gets there and walk off. Look at Fremantle and how big the port was in that era with the number of buildings associated with the shipping industry. It was huge. It’s likely he hitched a ride on a ship out of Fremantle.

I think he can’t be found here, because he’s just not here. Strong ties with his brother, he went to see his brother’s grave because he’s riddled with guilt and anger because his brother is dead and he’s still alive and wasn’t in that war zone and his anger towards his wife, and mental state is caused by that.

I don’t think Carl Webb was in Australia then which means he’s not in the grave. I think he either met with foul play overseas because he was aggressive and belligerent or just hung around there, and because it was over with his wife, he never came back and died there, had no ID and was dumped in the ground somewhere. Post war in those countries anything could happen. People everywhere. Nobody knows who’s who. He’s gone. No trace.

No. 1: I guess anything could happen in the late 1940’s, as you state. Individuals were displaced, countries were in turmoil, anyone could disappear, if they wished, by jumping ship or simply merging into a crowd, lose documents, create a false history etc. Who would care? It’s just a pity that Stuart Webb disputes current ideas, surely you would think he, of all people, needs closer in this case.

Is it possibly face-saving, that some detail has surfaced, perhaps a photo, that now shows that Carl Webb isn’t Somerton man

J A Robertson was a prominent business at Graves Street Kadina. Well-to-do couple who had overseas holidays England, Scotland and the Continent, and a good social life, visits to Melbourne for purchasing goods, who would have had connections with lawyers ie James McCarthy in Kadina. Kadina-Brinkworth railway had a station at Bute on Railway Terrace. Bute to Kadina is only 30km, not far by rail. Perhaps J A Robertson had other business interests and properties at Bute. Like a vacant one for Dorothy. Possibly employment as well. Why would she be in Kadina and Bute otherwise except for some connection. She knows them and got in touch before she left Melbourne. If you know a lawyer well you can talk to them and find out what to do, ie file the affidavit. Country town, everyone knows everyone. Same surname Robertson. Where would Dorothy get the money from for lawyers. Dorothy is chasing down maintenance she is owed as filed in March 1947. Carl knows she’s on to him and has shot through to Perth to hide and avoid payment or having his property seized. He’s not heading back to Adelaide in 1948, to have everything he’s got taken from him. He’s cashed in and he’s out of the country on a tramp ship.
