For over 70 years researchers have been trying to find a link, or in Gordon Cramer’s case create a fictional one that connects the Somerton Man to an espionage ring.
The following scenario looks pretty good at first glance. Norman Webb, personal chauffeur to The Secretary of the Department of Defence Sir Frederick Geoffrey Shedden (KCMG, OBE) in the late forties would have known where Shedden was going, when it happened, how long he was there for, what he took with him, who he was meeting (possibly), who was with him in the car if he had company on the trip and did he travel to the same location regularly or rarely. And of course if foreign interests knew who else was in town at the time and knew their movements as well – they’d have some very good information to send back to their masters.
Norman himself looks to be a simple sort of fellow, uncomplicated if you know what I mean – just the sort of bloke someone a lot smarter might like to take advantage of.
Which leads to the obvious question, given all the above is as per official records, who was responsible for easy going old Norman in getting the job? Given that there would have been no shortage of applicants for such a prestigious position.

And if Norman Webb was, for some reason, open to blackmail who knows what he heard, read & possibly have passed to others. That’s before our Chinese friends decided an electric car in Australia and other countries would be to their advantage.

Perhaps, as you state ‘a simple sort of fellow’ was just the type of man to be seen driving Shedden around on his travels. A man, at the end of the day, having a drink or two in a bar, strangers talking to each other. One stranger slightly tipsy, the other stranger fine tuning his words, for more words of interest?
