AI – just asking

The investigation into the Somerton Man’s identity has taken decades primarily due to the severe degradation of DNA from his 1948 burial, which was worsened by the embalming process. While independent researchers announced in July 2022 that they believed the man was Carl “Charles” Webb based on genetic genealogy, official, forensic confirmation has been delayed to ensure a high standard of evidence.

Here are the key reasons for the ongoing delay in the final Coroner’s decision:

    • Degraded Evidence: Formaldehyde from the 1948 embalming destroyed much of the DNA, making it challenging to extract a usable profile from the body.
    • Independent vs. Police Findings: The 2022 identification of Carl Webb was conducted by private researchers (Professor Derek Abbott and Colleen Fitzpatrick) using hair from a plaster cast made in 1949. The South Australia Police (SAPOL) are conducting their own formal, independent verification of these findings, which takes longer.
    • Rigorous Verification Process: For an official legal finding, SAPOL needed to complete DNA work on the actual remains, which were exhumed in 2021. This process involves coordinating multiple reports (Forensic Anthropology, Forensic Odontology) and analyzing the DNA to a standard that holds up to scrutiny.
    • The Wait for Final Reports: As of early 2025, it was reported that DNA work on the remains was completed, and reports were being finalized for the State Coroner.

The case is considered one of Australia’s most profound mysteries, and officials are likely taking extra care to provide a definitive, legally sound answer rather than speculation.

  1. Are there any legal eagles here that know how to obtain a piece of the legitimately exhumed bones about the same size as his half smoked “doofa” as there’s a place in Toronto that would say “ta-da!”

It’s the lack of curiosity from the media, as to why the delay continues, that baffles me.

“News Hounds” ain’t what they used to be.

    • Like they never knew how the original police investigation was so pathetic and riddled with incompetence. Nobody at home in that mob of SA journalists, then and now.

Exactly. Considering it’s up there with the top historical cases to ever come out of Adelaide, the press should be up the State Coroners arse with a microscope, mithering about the delay. Yet, not a peep.

It’s starting to boil my piss.
