How would the corpse of a man – described by Paul Lawson as being uncommonly well-built with broad shoulders, tightly muscled calves and a wedge-shaped body – have been the corpse of a habitual barbiturate user and ether addict? A bloke who liked to slap his wife around, stomp off to bed early when the cards weren’t going his way and being a non-communicative friendless dickhead in general. She probably had to change his sheets every day; a bloke zoned out on ether sometimes lets his bodily functions misbehave. At least heavy cocaine usage is free of such early morning complications, or so I’ve been told.
So, on the one hand we have a fit, well-dressed man and on the other a shambling wife-beating doper and I don’t remember anyone joining those two dots for as long as I’ve been in the game.
