No real problem there says Cramer. He asked us to ‘consider’ how long it might take to make those repairs, 15 minutes max. Of course when somebody was silly enough to ask him how that might have been managed with the suitcase at the station and the body miles away, the question wasn’t posted, blocked in fact.

Well, GC’s right about SM not being there overnight. If he was he would have been washed out to sea
Born and bred in Adelaide I know that stretch of beach at Somerton has no beach at high tide. There is no sand. The tide is right up to the sea wall.
SM was definitely dumped there on the morning of 1 December 1948. The Advertiser weather map page 10 shows high tide at 4:34am and sunrise 4:56am and first light is about half hour before that in Adelaide, about 4:30am. Slight seas and moderate north-east to north-west wind.
SM couldn’t possibly have been there overnight. The window of opportunity to dump him on the beach in low light and with ebbing tide is ideal between 4:30am and 5:00am
That’s what happened. It’s not speculation, the tide time and first light time prove it.
With that exact location being used, I wouldn’t rule out SM being carted from across the road, and a certain person keeping a lookout to make sure the coast was clear (literally)

So, it would appear that between 04.30-05.00, that was the ‘best’ time span for the appearance of the SM. (I’m trying to remember the time when the horse trainers first noticed the body, was it about 06.00?). Two other questions come to mind: 1. Why, if the SM fell foul of certain individuals, wasn’t he placed on the beach so that the high tide would wash him out to sea? Thus, no comeback if his body was never seen again.
You could, perhaps, think there was a reason why he wasn’t on that particular location until after the high tide had receded. In other words, he was meant to be found, others involved were only too well aware of the tide timetable?
2. Perhaps John Lyons did see a man waving his arm (drunk?) But, not the SM. later, this man got up and staggered home?

The News which was the Adelaide afternoon newspaper, gives the same forecast on page 10, 30 Nov 1948 mild day, north-west winds, slight seas. (Same as the Advertiser)
Adelaide can have mild days in November. The front page of the Advertiser 1 December 1948 gives the previous day’s temperatures as min 52.1 F, max 76.3 F (which is only 24.6 C) and likely around 3pm
Front page of the Advertiser 2 December 1948 gives the previous day’s minimum temperature as 65.7 F (which is only 18.7 C) and that would be just before dawn. It’s fairly cool for most people to want to take a walk at first light, so nobody was around.
I’m convinced SM wasn’t on the beach overnight, and that he was dumped there after first light
I’m also convinced that SM wasn’t Carl Webb an unrequited lover who went to see Jess, was rejected, went to the beach that evening and topped himself.
SM was not on that beach overnight because the tide was right up. He was dumped there between first light and dawn as the tide ebbed.

Wondering if the SM worked at the CCH? Then, I suppose why place his body on the beach opposite to the CCH, why draw attention to the CCH, if the CCH was not involved. But, I can’t remember reading any news on whether or not staff, at the CCH, were interviewed by the police. Perhaps the CCH was, in some form or other, involved and Adelaide being Adelaide, a swift coverup was all it took.

Time and Tide Waits For No Man mugger. In the SM case, they were done to death way before Chris Cramer’s first of several tiresome repeat ventures into the fray with his opinions born of those who’d made similar a decade ago and then some. You’ll likely find some of them right here on Tbt, if they’ve survived and many on CM’s ‘The last 24 hours’ thread too. Suggest you check and see what Peteb, Byron and others were discussing way back in 2013.

How sure can we be about the high tide reaching the wall overnight? Sandy beaches have always been unreliable in that respect, particularly given the effects of strong onshore and offshore winds and heavy rainfall in the near and far distances. A photo would help.

The Advertiser 30 November 1948 gives the evening high tide at 4:52pm. That tide would also be right up to the seawall and there would be no beach
That means there was never a body on the beach on the evening of 30 November 1948. It also means that those who claimed they were walking on the beach, weren’t

Sit in your car there on the Esplanade when you come to Adelaide and see how far up the tide comes at high tide. I already know that.

Well, I don’t agree with all of his assumptions about it, wind direction, storm, etc, but I can see from local knowledge that it is true and it’s just normal tides at Somerton not king tides
I lived south of Somerton at South Brighton for 23 years and that stretch of beach arguably the best bit in Adelaide between the Jetty at Brighton and Seacliff has no rock seawall and is a wide stretch of beach whereas the beach north at Somerton has the rock seawall and if that wasn’t there, the Esplanade would have probably been eroded into the sea by now and the homes along there under serious threat.
Just FYI I moved up the top of the hill south of the city 17 years ago and have views right up the coast and over the suburbs and the city.
Just saying, that’s how I see Somerton from local knowledge. If that rock wall wasn’t in place on that section of beach then there would be serious erosion because the tide is right up. That’s why the rock seawall is there and it’s not needed further south where the beach is wider.
Normal tide at Somerton seems to be around 2 metres and on 1 December 1948 the high tide is given at almost 3 metres, it would have been up high on the sea wall, not crashing as in a storm, just a high tide which would have covered all the sand in front of the wall. SM could not have possibly been there overnight and as he was there in the morning he was dumped there just before he was found.

All of what you’re telling us now, No. 1 has been said before, long ago and far away so why repeat it. Hope it’s not for ego stroking, as be the case with your friend Mr. C, Gordon Cramer. You being a Somerton Beach Nth Brighton denison and all so you say, we can respect your greater knowledge re the coastal layout in more recent times; however, things naturally changed following the many storms since 1948 and that must be put into perspective. Please do as I suggested and go back to early posts, you may learn a thing or two from the likes of those like Deveson and Co. who done their homework.

Sold listing on 11 August 2021 for 24A Esplanade Somerton Park shows the beach at Somerton Park with all the rocks piled up to make the seawall and the sea right up with no beach
At high tide you ain’t got a beach there at Somerton Park and not much beach at other times either

Couple of things Cramer forgot, or else didn’t wish to mention in his AI assusted dissertation come to mind. They being the two small mounds of seaborn debris close by the tidal wall, subject of which came up at one point; and of course the locked gate atop the stairway that may have created difficulties if a body was to be carried down by such means as the author suggests.

Fact: Somerton beach is the narrowest section of beach and at high tide the water is right up to the seawall and the sand is covered

Some might suggest wallowing in the tidal ebb & flow; no doubt due to the constantky rising sea levels over many decades and of course climate change, if you’re a believer. C. Gordon Cramer does not hold such views generally, but it don’t mean his latest borrowed theory is all shite, no not at all and I haven’t suggested anything of the sort. After all much of it belongs to guess who?

And, as bloody usual, this high tide scenario raises another couple of questions. Here we have PC Moss, a man who knows this beach well, and he’s listening to Lyons who’s telling him he saw what looked like the same fellow in the same place on the previous evening – so why wouldn’t Moss question how come the body hadn’t been swamped by the previous night’s high tide.
Come to think of it, why wasn’t the same question asked by the senior detectives working the case?

Three mounds of debris, not two, in the panorama shot of the beach scene at X marks the spot, seems to indicate they may have built up over some time so didn’t form their dump fullness during one tidal run in period to full height of 9′ at 4.34am. We discussed this at length in the past and none of us experts were able to explain why it should be thus, assuming the scene was photographed on 1 December.

Then of course there’s always those potential body drag marks that can only be seen with 20/20 vision. What may be seen as heel mark indentations lead from the roadside fence north of Alvington CCH down a sandy bank towards the nearest debris mound. This could well have served as a nice cushion for the subsequent body drop (dead or alive) from the stormwall top to beach level. Saves having to use Cramer’s creative staircase mock-up which is of little use when a real life photo of the stairs be as plain as day, taken on the day.

Perhaps PC Moss, being a lowly pc, didn’t want to contradict a well known business man, especially, if John Lyons came across as an ‘I know better than you’ attitude? Senior detectives didn’t ask the question because they already knew the the SM wasn’t on the beach the previous night. And, if PC Moss had raised the issue with senior detectives, he would have received the same admonishment as finding the box of matches.

Brighton retreat, ending up spending the remaineder of his police service at Henley Beach, a shit hole according to thems that served there. Couple of good stories about his later on duty commendments should anybody be interested (clue = ducklings and floating ice boxes).

OK, looks as if Gordon Cramer and Co. win that round without having to get a knockout blow in, or prove anything more than evidence already on the board. Plenty of proof re ‘Surfs up’ at Somerton Beach to settle the score, in black and white from early times that were plainly ignored, not by Byron Devious they were’nt, nor producers of Inside Story. Still there for the asking on NAA @ Somerton Beach, how strange.

I’ve walked a few times along that part of Somerton Beach and, there is hardly any beach at that location, just large boulders, rocks etc. I guess you just stand in front of the boulders, nearly opposite the site of the CCH, and try and imagine what it looked like in 1948. Pity the council have repaved everywhere, cut trees down, benches taken away etc.

Environmental mistakes were made and development went ahead on the sandhills
You get a glimpse of what it once looked like when you walk along the beach behind Minda Home (between Gladstone Road and Repton Road Somerton Park – see it on Google Earth). The sand dunes are still there. Notice how there is no rock seawall along that stretch of beach because the sand dunes are still there. You can scoot along there on Street View. Walking along that stretch of beach when I was young you felt very isolated and lonely. There was always more sand on the beach there and there still is, you can see that on Google Earth. In the late 60’s on that beach, up the Repton Rd end and near the Surf Club, you’d have rock music festivals on a stage that was erected on the beach, that were free and attracted a huge crowd. I saw Jim Keays The Masters Apprentices play there, must have been 1968.

Those grand old buildings, together with their owners give you an appreciation of the earlier days of wealth and political power in Adelaide. Sydney on the other hand was a lot of allyways, two-up schools and badly built tenements.
