Seats are for sitting on.

Some things don’t make sense about this mystery, well, a lot of things don’t but over the years most have been discussed to death, except for this one.

———

The place is Somerton Beach, more specifically it is the area within a thirty foot radius that encompasses a seat, a set of steps to the beach and the final resting place  (X) of an individual universally known as the Somerton Man,

We know two witnesses sat themselves down in what must have been an unoccupied seat (pictured below) after arriving at about 7:30 pm and we know the Somerton Man was already on the beach and alive at the time. But nobody ever came forward to say they had seen him arriving, leaving two options as to how he managed it – the first being that he was strolling along the beach before deciding to take a break by the rock wall, but this, given his attire (highly polished shoes, socks, slacks, white business shirt, tie, pullover and coat) seems unlikely and if it had been the case then it’s almost certain that he would have been noticed.

Which leaves the steps. And the seat.

The one thing we’ll never know is whether the seat was occupied when he arrived, and if it had been surely the occupants would have remembered him making an unsteady way down the steps as at least two other witnesses thought he was drunk.

And if it was unoccupied .. why didn’t he sit there?

Try again…Bloke tripped on the faulty stairs descending and fell through the railing onto the sand below, that is before reaching the bench seat level atop the seawall, piece of piss to a trained constable.

If he fell, per Dusty’s scenario, would that account for his bruised knuckles or blood stained shirt trying to stop his fall?

Certainly account for the sand in his hair, the welts of his shoes and also his missing hat which came off on the way down.

Great photo of the stairs sans GC’s SM version with red triangulation lines and measurements to fool punters. You’ll please to note the weird missing (?) treads on the upper stair set, compared with the normal bottom set.

Note also the moon sets at 6:51pm before sunset at 7:14pm

So when the street lights used to go out across Adelaide, which from memory was 11pm, there was no moonlight, no street lights on the Esplanade, right throughout the night.

Pitch black on the Esplanade and on the sand down on the beach which was way below street level and hidden from view

Steps down to the beach in pitch black darkness, and hidden from street level

Not a soul on the beach

Sunrise at 4:46am, and first light would be about 4:15am

and interestingly moon rise is at 4:09am giving just enough light to see your way down the steps and onto the beach before first light, and not be seen by anyone

5 minute window to get down and back up just after 4am is all you need

    Just saying…

Some, more observant than others, may have noticed that, in re CCH Alvington beach access stairway, unlike the bottom steps with tread boards morticed into the side rails, the upper flight, those with prominant angled risers, may appear to be short on treads for most part. Could be in the photo, or just maybe they are set an inch or so below the risers for a good reason, ie., as a safety measure for children with disabilities being better able to navigate safe decent to the beach without their crutch leg tips slipping over the edge.

No need to worry about street lighting, doesn’t appear to have been any that far down the Esplinade. Two potential problems for someone not wanting to be seen, would be lights from the kids home which would reveal any untowards activity by the stairway, and the police radio patrol, whose diligent officers always pulled over to check the beach for anything likely to disturb the peace, while having a tea break and a durry while calling in.

While I’m still sober enough, some might like to check whether the two white posts, three sets north of the gate atop the CCH , stairway, forming part of a long rail fence above the beach. They are at 90% east from X marks the spot (oblique pic) and appear to be missing a rail (not sure). Also appears to be a drag mark representing two human heels coming from that position and landing on the beach near a mound of debris a foot or two from X. Any detractors might report in to CGC TS/BS as Anonymous.

Kids younger than say ten, especially kids in need of constant medication day and night, kids without mums by their bed don’t feel safe in the dark. My best guess be that all the front rooms on the upper floors overlooking the beach would be lit up like a 1948 Christmas tree. Speaking of which in those far off times before you were born ‘No One’, police radio cars from town paid special attention to isolated places like Alvington CCP, just in case of some accident or other emergency in need of quick police radio car response. Best you do some research rather than carrying on making up stories to suit your agenda ie., Pan Am and the phoney flim flam Somerton Man. No erfence.

So looks like cunning AI has convinced the old crook that their outward and homeward journey was via the Somerton shoreline (as per the histerical video). Wonder if it ever occurred to Cramer, that it may have been his goody two shoes Jack Lyons who be the ‘digger in da woodpile’ and not the commie couple who arrived on the scene fifteen minutes after he and Helen had left. I can recall we tried to pin jeweller Jack to his ’48 abode in Whyte St. (watch the spelling), Somerton but, far as I know, we never found it. Best I could come up with be his watch shop in town and residential abode in Chelmsford St. Millswood (WW2). Maybe Lyons was a Govt. plant; afterall his claimed swim pal Arty Lee who he met on the beach ‘this morning’ 78 years ago, certainly had working ties to Immigration

Yes. From memory milongal got him to Whyte in 52 and Pelling figured he wasn’t there in ’48 unless he was in a tent, hardly likely for a noted Omega watch dealer with premises in the Bank building in the city. Makes one wonder how the feller could get his work done, then get from town to his temorary digs by PT before sunset and have time to take the cheese’n for an evening stroll along Somerton foreshore. Reckon he should have been put on our suspect watch list years ago; no wonder the Coroner Tom Cleland didn’t believe him. See if we can get to the bottom of the residential situation if we dare. Jack claims in 1948 that he was at 52 Whyte St., then he reaffirms it on a customs declaration in 1950, and yet the house wasn’t built it seems intil 1955. On another declaration upon his returning home from OS in 1958 he gives No. 66 which is where the Luons couple seemed to be staying in 1972 when he was interviewd by John Ruffles. As for your consistent assertions of No. 62, well go figure, I’ll stick with his likely having told a little porky to police back in ’48 in order to be able to spin them a yarn about the evening walk along the beach with wife Helen that didn’t hardly ever happen.

I must admit it does look odd

If you saw someone waving his hand around at you, especially in that era and in friendly Adelaide, you would think he was beckoning you, because he needed assistance, and you would go over and see if you could render it, and at least ask him if he was ok, not just walk past him. Not in that era anyway. He might tell you to f off, but lying down drunk unlikely to take a swing at you.

Maybe this guy wasn’t on the beach in the evening at all. Just a fabrication by all those who said they saw him, and the “suit” was a fabrication as well.

We saw him in the evening. But that’s just a cover to make you think he was already there at dusk, and must have died there overnight. When in fact nobody was there, and he was dumped there in the wee hours of the morning.

Interesting. A business couple are more likely to shut up shop at 5:30pm and hang around in the city together and have a counter meal at a pub or Comley’s cafe in King William St, and let the crowd shoot through, rather than rush home to nothing. Chew over the day’s work and takings. Especially if they were empty nesters by then and no need to be home for a family. No TV in those days to get home to, to watch the 6 o’clock news. You picked up your evening paper “The News” from the newsboy in the street or one of the newspaper stands that were kerbside in that era.

I’m thinking that he may have timed his morning swim to link up with his apprentice Neil Day and his hoop Horrie Patching to see how his (?) horses were doing. Arthur would have accessed the beach via the CCH stairs, say ảround 5.30 (100ft from Wilkinson Ave. and shocked to find them off their mounts and tending to the stiff as he made his descent. Thats what I reckon must’ve gone down and the rest is something similar to what we know, John Lyons or not. How about getting our fine adelaide team to hook up with Neil Day if he’s still with us and see if he has recall of Arthur Lee being in on the deal that morning, as an extension to the outline he gave the doco people in 2018.

We’re a wake up by now to Ms. Whorewoods smoke & mirrors antics to a man with possible exception of Pelling who loves her dusty put down posts to pieces, topics of which had been well covered by him in the distant past. Not to worry though, seems in stealing fat dusty’s thunder she’s actually giving support to our valid points of reference. Doesn’t matter that she prefers a 73 year old geriatric hotel magnate A. J. Lee to his 36 year old son A. J. Lee Jr. MC as John Lyons’ morning swimming chum. Speaking of hotels and one run in town by the Leahy family that she chose to mention for filler, brings to mind the Leahy’s also owned the St. VIncents Hotel at 24 Jetty Rd., Glenelg in 1948, and our Kate Thomson, daughter of Jessica & Prosper married one of the sons. Can’t figure how Steph missed my related post, especially in that the couple, still toether in retirement on the Murray, had later bought the place next to widow Freeman of Freeman chemist notoriety.

One possibility about John B. Lyons-was he the man who stood at the top of the steps looking down for 5 mins? The man, that Neil and his girlfriend saw, in a suit and hat? And, who ‘forgot’ to advise the police?

We can dismiss Ms. Whorewoods latest attempts at stirring the pot, she’d bin all over the Lyon/Lee show in the CM Ruth Ballint thread so she knows what what, it ain’t pretty and I think I’ve just twigged Jestyn’s “Higher Authority”… Lt. Col. Arthur James Lee MC 2 BEM (SX 2891) and Lt. Col. Geoffrey Malcolm Leane MC (SX2917) were both Saint Peters school old boys when WW2 broke out and so joined up together direct from the militia into 2/28 infantry battalion AIF. They did the full Nth African Rommel stunt before heading off to the Pacific with their seasoned lads for the Pacific finale with Tojo’s Tora Tora Tora (got that Gerry); then heading back batteted & bruised to their former mundane civvy jobs after the show was over in 1945. One went back to pub ownership and club management plus getting into a good part time lurk as a Federal Immigration advisor, and t’other back to life as a supervisory Detective Sen. Sgt. with general crime squad in SAPOl. You reckon a pair of top military commanders might just have had a bit of this and that going down as a team once back in civvy street eg., helping clean up the mess made at home during their five year abscence. Take the case of SM, a body with no name found on Somerton Beach, a chain or two from Arty Lee’s home & horse stables. Think on it sweetheart, you might learn something about what’s what courtesy of “fat Dusty”.

Not likely Clive, going by the “not tall” part description given by Olive Neill. Lyons was 6 ft neat and as for Arthur Lee he was medium height at 5′ 9″ (see chart). Anyone else come to mind? how’s about Dr. Nunn from No. 15 Esplanade across the way?

Not to be outdone by Steph’s pub crawl of Adelaide in 1985. Back in my prime time circa. mid 60s, soldiers pubs in order of preference were from memory, Rundle, Gresham, Strathmore, Governor Hindmarsh, Duke of York, Arkaba, Crossroads, and the Pier Hotel at Glenelg. I note her choice of pubs like the Victoria Hotel in Hindley St. were a bit too flash for young diggers from Woodside camp; en route to the ‘third world’ war. We got sixty four bucks a fortnight equal to full adult pay at 17 so they said. Lucky to touch it in ’66 for us youngsters but, don’t think the 20 year old nashos were overly impressed.

Three more takes on Mr. Cramer’s AI generated frontal view of Somerton Man’s positioning by the much altered steps. They include a more pronounced drag mark three yards to his right, an added hiding hole in the sea wall to his left, and missing car on the street level thst had been thete in place on all his earlier shopped photos. I’d reckon we’ll hear more about each item in an update.

He wasn’t there in the evening at all. He was dumped there on his back on the sand in the wee hours of the morning

Prosper was even taller than Lyons, Clive and, just to reiterate, Olive Oil Neill said “He was not tall”. Mind, he was only their for five minutes, doesn’t sound overly clandestine to my suspicious mind.

Probably that’s why I kept getting the short shrift from all my attempts at ommenting over at Nick’s show. Was thinking I’d been given persona non grata status, couldn’t for the life of me understand why, me being such a loveable laddy.
