See how the second phone number written on the back of the Freeman Rubaiyat was covered up.

Perhaps GF wasn’t aware of the photo in “The Advertiser”, which seems strange since he put so much effort in assembling all the known information for his book, and his police connections etc.
I wonder if the Naval intelligence, who failed to make any sense of the Code, asked SAPOL about the telephone numbers, and who/where they lead to?

More likely they were given the doctored photograph ..

I’ve often wondered which version of the Code page was sent to Naval intelligence. Given them the ‘sanitized’ version, so to speak, would eliminate any queries regarding the telephone number(s), writing etc that Naval intelligence may well have raised. Especially, if a ‘higher power’ didn’t want too many individuals asking difficult questions. And, it would appear that the original photo of the Code was only shown in SA newspaper(s)? Further limiting its exposure interstate.

Beats me how the newspaper got hold of the code image with Harkness’ phone number when it was supposed to be kept under wraps ..

By the time the photo was shown, the police had already spoken to Jessie. So, I suppose they thought what the heck, we’ll let the press print it, maybe hoping that someone might know something. A ‘deliberate’ leak from the police a possibility?
