Norma May and Leo Vivian ..

Leo Keane is the young stud reclining handsomely in the front of the family. He was born in December 1915.

Norma May Martin one row up to his right is the little tike shading her face. She was born November 1925.

If this photograph was taken no later than June 2 1929, as stated by Stuart Webb, then Leo would have been 14 and Norma 4.

If it was taken in 1935 he would have been 19 and Norma 10.

So it looks like 1929 might be right for those two, maybe, but that doesn’t mean Charlie is Carl when he looks like Richard and is 3” on the short side.

And to further confuse, Carl Webb was born in 1905, making him 24 in 1929 and 30 in 1935.  Charles Richard on the other hand, born 1917 would have been 12 in 1929 and 18 in 1935.

And there’s Amy, supposedly at death’s door after a long illness but looking surprisingly happy and healthy ..

Leo is in short pants which is like junior high school wear, 1st and 2nd year high, and in those days you turned 13 in 1st year and turned 14 in 2nd year. So he’s around that age. He’s also got a pullover on, so his shorts are a force of habit or mummy couldn’t afford to buy him any grey melange strides. By the time you got to Intermediate you wouldn’t be seen dead in shorts, and some of us never were in 1st or 2nd year either, you left them behind in Primary School. The little girl Norma looks like a preschooler, and we started school at age 5, so she is about 4. So looks like 1929. And that doesn’t make any of them Somerton man and none of them are.

    • Be interesting to hear JohnS backtrack on his opinion of the date the pic was taken, from memory it was 1936.

Back to other evidence, nobody can find the toothpaste brand, because what looks like a tube of toothpaste is lather shave cream. The first can of pressurized shaving cream was Rise shaving cream, introduced in 1949. In 1948 shave cream came in a zinc alloy tube. Look closely at the tube of shaving cream and you will see a face and a hand holding up a safety razor. Reckon I can make out the Harbour Bridge as well. They wouldn’t have wanted Stuart Littlemore to see that one either or what was printed on it. Upmarket hotels offer guests complimentary toiletries and you’d expect that in The Australia Hotel in that era. You need to work the cream into a lather to apply it to your face and you do that with your shaving brush. Apply the cream directly to the brush and using the glass dish you see as one of the suitcase items, which he had to get because they lost his luggage, add a bit of water then move the brush around to create the lather. If you have a cut throat razor you don’t need to worry about running out of disposable razor blades. Somerton man would have had other motives for carrying a cut throat razor, along with his makeshift weaponry.

You can buy Palmolive lather shave cream today which is ok to take on flights whereas if you take aerosol shave foam security scan check-in can rip your aerosol can off you.

  5. I’m still coming in after 1929 based on Norma, she’s going to look 12 months younger because of her late in the year birth date, plus I think its Norman in the front, compare how he looks to his war photos. 1933 has Norma being 8 but looking 7 or smaller as kids were smaller back then and Norman being 11.

    • Yeah, but we have the BIG problem with 5’8” inches with Blondie, seeing as he should be 5’11”

      • Roy was 5′ 8″ I think? The other Charlie, not Carl was 5’9″ , looks about right in the four person photo?

  6. other problem I have with Leo being the boy in the front is he’s 14 in 1929, why is he in short pants? Where is his 12 year old brother, John Russell and 10 year old sister Gwen, Mum and Dad are apparently in the photo. Then we have a very sick Amy looking well, and her hubby isn’t near his dying wife but apparently right up the back. Amy’s dress is that of a younger woman. All four of their kids aren’t in the photo. Nothing seems right lol

Norma isn’t an 8 year old. 8 year olds are in Grade 3 in Primary School. Grade 3 is upper Primary School. Grade 3 is close to middle of your Primary School years Grades 1 to 7. You started school at 5 and turned 6 in Grade 1, you turned 12 in Grade 7 and in your 1st year of High School you turned 13 and became a teenager. Although I do recollect a couple of girl students in my class being teens near the end of Grade 7 who were late starters and used to go around bragging to others that they were teenagers. Norma is a preschooler 4 years old and not in Grade 3. Doris Amy is second from the left and she is a girl not a woman, and not Amy who was born in 1895. 1929 is correct. And nobody in that photo is Somerton man anyway

    • if it’s 1929 then Doris Amy would be 10, we are in agreement that it’s Doris Amy and not her mother Amy but I think its later. My grandchildren live with me so I’m daily with a 13 year old and 7 year old and spend each day in an Australian school with children in the younger years, my take is still that Norma is older than 4 in the group photo, Doris Amy older than 10 and that it’s Norman in the front not Leo. The fact that Stuart and others have named everyone on the photo yet there are many family members missing, Russell and Amy’s 4 kids, two of Freda and Gerald’s two kids I agree , we can’t say for sure that Carl is even in the photo.

The writing on the shave cream tube in the suitcase items photo is too blurred to read. If you could read it, it would give the game away. It was blurred out in the photo on purpose. The Australia Hotel name printed on it as one of their in-house toiletries. But we have another clue left by the artist who created the image of the picture with the face of the man and the arch of the Harbour Bridge. The image is under an elongated letter “A” which represents Australia ie The Australia Hotel. Somerton man was in Sydney, he stayed at The Australia Hotel in Castlereagh St, Pan Am had their Sydney front desk on the mezzanine floor. He flew in by Pan Am, they lost his luggage and he had to gather essential items to get by and then had to push on to Melbourne to be ready to be signalled to travel to Adelaide, which he received by the coded message.
