Small Matters Of Little Consequence.

SM left his suitcase at the baggage counter and bought a one-way ticket from Adelaide Station to Henley Beach, meaning he had no plans to return to collect the bag when he bought the ticket.

SM then changed his travel plans and took a bus to Glenelg, not bothering to collect his suitcase.

So, if he planned to stay overnight somewhere he would have had slept in his clothes.

~~

Professor Cleland apparently made no comment as to why fingerprint wizard James Durham wasn’t asked to lift some prints from the articles in the suitcase, many of them no doubt would have yielded good results. Instead he set himself the task of matching the clothing worn on the body with that found in the suitcase.

He put on SM’s double-breasted coat and found it buttoned up with some difficulty. He had the same trouble with the sports-coat found in the suitcase. He said the sleeves of the sports-coat were not as long as those on the double-breasted coat and the coat itself was smaller as well.

Cleland concluded that for a smaller chested and abdominal man than himself, the coat on the body might have been too large and the one in the suitcase too small.

SM was 5’11” and had a very well developed upper body according to Paul Lawson, that being so it would seem that the sportscoat may have been a very tight fit.

~~

Witness Lyons thought SM was drunk the evening before the morning he was found dead.

Witness Strapps didn’t see him move his feet that same evening but did notice they had changed position.

Witness Strapps disagreed with DS Leane with regard to the type of trousers being worn by SM in the evening and those found on the body the next morning.

~~

Nobody came forward to say they had seen a drunk arriving at the beach in the early evening.

Nobody came forward to say they had seen a drunk leaving the beach later that evening.

Nobody came forward to say they had sold a drunk a pasty that same evening.

Nobody came forward to say they had seen a drunk returning to the beach later that night.

~~

PC Moss said it was a pleasant evening and the beach would have been busy.

~~

Witness PC Moss disagreed with DS Leane when he said matches were found on the body.

~~

The Freeman Rubaiyat was never photographed. The torn page was never photographed. The phone number written on the back cover of the Rubaiyat was never photographed. Gerry Feltus could only find two people who said they saw the book, both were un-named.

~~

SM had no money in his pockets, no ration card, no luggage stub. No watch on his wrist.

~~

Despite being a person of interest, Jessica Harkness wasn’t asked to make a statement and neither was Chemist Freeman.

~~

Coroner Cleland adjourned the inquest to await further developments yet despite the handing in of the Freeman  Rubaiyat and identification of the person whose phone number was written on the back cover he closed it down, reversing his initial finding that SM died elsewhere only to rule he died where he was found.

Why would anyone leave a suitcase, in a safe place, and not return to pick it up? Possibly, because whoever deposited the suitcase never intended to return and pick it up, was it deliberately left at the railway station as a ‘plant’? Why were some of the clothes different sizes? Why was Cleland quite happy to wear the clothes from the suitcase but, not a word about possible fingerprints? DS Leane had disagreed with both Moss and Strapps regarding matches and trousers. It’s as if Leane and Cleland knew what the true circumstances were in this case and, acted accordingly.

  2. Then you have James Cowan, the senior government analyst, the man who earlier had travelled to the US (Berkeley University) and look over the shoulders of the scientists at work developing nuclear weapons – but when it came to identifying the black powder shaken from the particle brush found in the suitcase, he just shrugged his shoulders, said he had no idea what it was.

All true, but all a dead end as far as finding a trace to the identity of Somerton man

Kean Jr needs to be checked thoroughly in the US archives https://www.archives.gov/

I recall the open weave US pat. light khaki service ties being reversible hence not amenable to marking, not to mention a replacement value of zilch. What purpose be served sticking one’s name on an item of no worth, whatsmore why the Jr to follow T Kean. Gotta be having a lend of us.

The necktie item would be genuine. US troops did write their names on their neckties. There are many online which confirm that. One here that belonged to Jacobs. Jr is used by people of some distinction who use the same given name as the father’s. I think this guy T Kean Jr is not your ordinary G.I. Joe https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/232457742373

So, they had both a suitcase with contents and, 6 months later, a book, both with potential leads in the investigation. Were both ‘independent’ of each other?, what I’m getting at is, if one was lost or not located, then the other would still be valuable in yielding clues etc. In particular, with regard to the Rubaiyat, was it a lucky discovery on the back seat of a car, or was there more to this than meets the eye?

Get a chance won’t hurt to compare the T. Kean Jr printing on the tie with that of Geoffrey Malcolm Leane, Lionel’s boss and brother. Two arrival card entries and Two WW2 service records are interesting in themselves, even if the pensmanship doesn’t grab youse.

There are three items that Kean Jr is written on. The necktie, the laundry bag, and the singlet. It’s just a matter of checking that the writing of his name on all three is written the same way.

No photos of the Kean? laundry bag, the Keen?, singlet, both sans Jr like the Keane, Keanie or Keanic tie and anyhow both went missing along with the phantom electricians screwdriver. Any more bright ideas?

  10. On the other hand, someone went to great pains to pin, mount and photograph the Barbour thread, tools and tie.

And the Barbour thread was considered to be the link to the SM, because of mending on his trousers. So, the photograph was used to reinforce the ‘evidence’ i.e. Barbour thread was linked to the SM, as nothing else in the photo did?

Just making sure the singlet and laundry bag are nowhere, as thought. If they ever did exist. Kean name is common in US, Kean University NJ (pronounced Cane). House of Reps Thomas Kean Jr in NJ, his father Governor Thomas Kean, his grandfather House of Reps Robert Kean, his great grandfather Senator Hamilton Kean, his great-great uncle Senator John Kean. Not to say they are connected to our research in any way. Illustrates that Kean and Kean Jr are around in the US. That’s what we’re looking for Kean and Kean Jr and a connection

Looking for T. Kean Jr. in Tennesse? may as well be looking for a straw in a haystack, or a needle in a bricked camel’s ass. No matter, ain’t gonna happen!

The objective is Kean and Kean Jr and not necessarily TN, and some have been found. We are uncertain at this point if the initial is T or J or whatever.

If anything, it looks like a “7” (I know people who use similar ‘T’, not so much ‘J’ – but wouldn’t be prepared to call it either.

On the face of it, the suitcase is simple – he was going to the beach and needed somewhere to leave it.
This would imply a few things – he had just arrived in town or planned to leave that day (otherwise why lug the suitcase around); Secondly, it suggests wherever he was going he didn’t think he’d need it (so he wasn’t expecting to stay overnight at someone else’s); Thirdly he planned to return – probably later that day.

But then you still run into problems. Why go to the beach all dressed up? And doesn’t the suitcase seem a bit bare for someone who was staying interstate? Presumably it costs money to have them look after your gear – so it’s something an itinerant would probably avoid (and instead take the case with him).
If we believe the suicide idea, why check the suitcase? Why not just leave it on the train or similar? It seems an unnecessary step to check it – and create a record – when you’d assume dumping a suitcase somewhere could make it disappear far easier.

Segue – I still have suspicions he might not have traveled alone that day. While I take anyone’s point that someone may not stand out and going unnoticed isn’t really all that unusual, I also think part of the reason people can’t remember seeing him is because they’re trying to recall seeing someone on their own.

Coupla mootish points following Macka’s reintro of a case for numero 7 on the Kean??? tie, one that Nick Pelling and fellow Webb converts concluded unanimously as being connected to Freemason membership than military issue as had been all the rage previously. OK we can agree there being six ties all told, ie., four in the suitcase contents garage floor pic, two inside and two scattered; added to that a tie SM wore at the beach, t’other in the mortuary pose. Six ties be five too many for a soon to be dead man so must have been planted by one having something to gain by the photographic pose decades later. To what end one might ask?. Any drop-kick out there care to take a punt? I’ll give youse a clue. KISS!
