4 – What happens next?

Going for the basic scenario here /

  1. The coroner finds that SM’s DNA proves he’s a Webb.
  2. He also finds that SM having the 3 Keane labels adds strength to his finding.
  3. Added to this, he agrees that Carl (Charlie) Webb is the most likely suspect as he is the only male member of the family of the right age who died without a death certificate.
  4. All proving that the Somerton Man is Carl Webb.
  5. But the man tagged as Charlie  (below) is not the Somerton Man.
  6. …. and it is something the coroner is unlikely to consider.

So we’re stuck with it .. just like the album page was stuck to the page facing it.

Is it at all possible that there was another family member, of the Webb family or, was the SM a possible adoption?

There was actually another missing member of the Keane family. I can’t remember his name at the moment and don’t know exactly where he fitted in. The Webbs and Keanes had contacted the police about both Charlie and the other man over time. From memory the other family member was a trombone playing plumber! Stuart Webb would be able to tell you more…

GC will make sure the Coroner is aware of it. Two people whose faces don’t match and heights are different means they are two different people.

The Coroner wouldn’t want the stigma of being incompetent, neither would the Courts

Reasonably serious question, thoughts on the 3 Kean/Keane instances in #2 being different?

Perhaps coroner has found that body is not a Webb. Now what do they do? Given Abbott and Fitzgerald’s publicity, you want to:
    a) Make sure you’re 100% certain before declaring different results
    b) Be able to find a way to explain *why* they got the wrong results (possibly including explaining *why* they found a Webb hair or two)

On some level, they want everything to be as non-controversial as possible (it’s not helpful for them to be inundated with opinions on why it’s Webb when they discover it isn’t).
Not saying that that’s the case – but in any event, waiting for the coroner to actually say something before I’m prepared to concede that it was a Webb in the coffin (let alone at the morgue or on the beach, for that matter).

Incidentally, I didn’t realise that the exhumation of SM wasn’t a targeted attempt to identify him, but rather part of a larger operation called Operation Persevere to idnetify previously unidentified remains through the state – but perhaps that explains why it’s taking so long – they’re not specifically focussed on the Somerton case.
