Meet Xanthe Mallett, Forensic Genealogist – She disagrees with Abbott and Fitzpatrick.
This is Xanthe Mallett, she’s a forensic anthropologist and criminologist who chose archaeological science for her undergrad degree from England’s University of Bradford then a research Masters at the University of Cambridge UK which was followed by a PhD in forensic facial recognition at the University of Sheffield for which she was awarded a joint scholarship from the University and the FBI.
Ms. Mallett is on record as saying we may never know the identity of the Somerton Man, this despite the chest-beating and self-proclaimed successes of Colleen Fitzpatrick and Professor of Engineering Derek Abbott.
Note: There is little dispute about the hair Fitzpatrick used as belonging to Charlie Webb, the insurmountable problem we have is we don’t have any proof it came from the Somerton Man’s head.

That’s correct
Nothing and nobody can prove that there is a link
Not the dental records or anything else.
If there was a photo of the man on the beach
when he was on the beach
taken by a passer by,
for example it happened to appear in a scenery shot,
we could say,
yes there is the proof we need.
But unless something surfaces
there is nothing to link the man on the beach to anyone.
He can’t be traced
and he probably wasn’t meant to be.

Was it the practice, in the Australia of 1940s, to photograph dead bodies in situations?

Clive, here you go.

Thanks Pete, very interesting article on the use of photos in crime scenes. So, if Patrick Durham had been on Somerton Beach that morning, with his trusty camera, the true face of the SM may have been revealed for all to see?

OK but , on top of the DNA you’ve got
1 The resemblance of SM to Carl
2 The Keane Link
3 Webb disappears at the right time
4 No death records for Carl
5 Carl’s age matches
6 SM long suspected to be from Melbourne

Going back to the early morning of 1st December, I understand that a number of horse riders were looking at the body. If none of them questioned the newspaper photos of the SM, are we to assume that the photos were true and accurate?

Fair assumption, and so would Doc Bennett have sounded the alarm as he was the bloke who examined the body in the ambulance..

@ Dude…There’s me thinking, all along, that the (irritatingly few) photographs we have of Charlie don’t resemble SM at all!
There has to be a photo out there, somewhere, of Charlie, taken much nearer to 1948. Despite the interest, no one has come up with one and it baffles me.

They released a photo and called it a reconstruction
That’s how they got away with it
What they said by that was
this actually isn’t the guy who was on the beach
we reconstructed it to hide his true identity
and if you think it looks like Boxall, you got it
but we won’t admit to that
Newspapers etc reported it as:
A photographic reconstruction of the body found on Somerton Beach, released by police in 1948. Credit: South Australia Police
So those witnesses on the beach who saw him would have thought when they saw it in the papers, he looks different, but he was probably decomposed or something and they made a likeness and tidied it up, as they say it’s a “reconstruction”
or they just doubted their recollection and thought
that’s not who I saw, but I’m not clear on that now
so it must have been who I saw, the authorities don’t make mistakes, yes that’s who I saw, they said so.
and those who actually examined the body
would have accepted that what was given to the press
was just a “reconstruction” for the public and not an official release
Anyone who went to the authorities and said I saw a different man would have been told it’s just a reconstruction, or your memory is blurred because of the events, morning light, or whatever they wanted to fabricate, including to PC Moss or told him his prospects of promotion are not looking that good
After all they are the authorities
and who are you to question what they say
Just another trick in the entire Somerton man saga

No One: And no doubt the riders, who were the first to come across his body, probably talked about the photos amongst themselves and each of them agreed on one point, but disagreed on other points about the photos, so, eventually because they couldn’t agree amongst themselves, they decided to keep numb?

Your saying that they used boxalls face to model the morgue picture?

Jockeys don’t talk, particularly apprentices. Neil is still going but moved to trotters.

lonerangerous: for the umpteeth time, Neil’s mate at the scene Horrie, was at that time 35 and a class one hoop so we can skip the dumb arse apprentice no talkie crap!

@ No one…. You keep saying that the photo of SM has been morphed from a photo of Alf Boxall. Where have you got this story from ?
(It sounds like total bollocks to me)
What’s your source?
Incidentally, I agree with you that Boxall looks like the corpse in the photo to the point where I’ve mentioned here previously that they could be brothers…and obviously, Hackness was pretty convinced too.
