Gordon Cramer’s take on the real purpose of SA Forensic’s task.

GC writes today “ The whole aim of the (SA Forensic) report is to reach a conclusion as to whether the exhumed remains are those of The Somerton Man, and what we know from the evidence is that the body of that man is the one on which Dr Dwyer performed the autopsy on December 2nd, 1948.”

What Cramer appears to be suggesting is that the exhumed body may not be the one found on the beach on December 1st and this view is shared by the police … hence the reason for the exhumation and forensic analysis of the remains. Cramer has apparently been dissuaded that the police wish to initially pursue a DNA linked result and are instead primarily interested in matching the number of teeth found either in the skull or scattered about in the remains of the original coffin in comparison with those mapped and counted by Dr Dwyer (pic).

In other words, the police and coroner are not so much interested in who the body is but who he is not.

This, according to GC is their whole aim.

How such a simple task, counting teeth, could take over 900 days is worthy of an entry in the Guinness Book Of Records. Then again and according to GC, both the SA police and the coroner have ‘massive case loads.’

    The dental chart isn’t official
There is no reference that would link it to anyone. Not dated, not signed, has no persons name, no morgue reference, has no stamp or government mark

You would be laughed out of court trying to present it as evidence

I have to wonder if the missing teeth were due to a sporting injury. He had a good physique for rugby.

      Garo…
If it was boxing, then he really needed a better gum shield and to work on his defence a little.
As a very unsuccessful amateur (think of Marciano’s record but in reverse) and a small time trainer, I’d have recommended him the “Philly shell” stance, maybe!
On a more serious note (just for a second)…if he was a boxer and was so defenceless as to lose all those teeth…I’d expect a bit of scarring on his eyebrows and his nose to be all over the shop.

I left a comment on GC’s blog, he told me to come here because I said robin looks like the Somerton man and I think if they had the actual DNA profile of SM(not CW)than maybe there a match, politely(sarcastically) told me to come here and I know my comment has nothing to do with this article, but I know the person who runs this blog is cool,Cheers!

Just wondering and it’s a silly thought, l know but, is there a connection between the missing teeth and having high calf leg muscles? Just something telling me the two physical features may be linked.

      • Clive, I’m so glad you asked as I have studied this phenomenon for many years and coincidentally am just about ready to publish a treatise on the subject, but rather than bore you with the minutiae of my intensive research let me summarise my findings.

Men who have lost a majority of their teeth, according to my deep and fruitful studies, have had to wander the highways and byways of the countryside in order to find food soft enough for them to masticate, we’re talking soft nettle, wild young asparagus, overripe native plums, the immature roots of Durobby trees, witchetty grubs, quandongs and more importantly, soft-boiled snails and water softened cane toads – you can just suck them off the bone.
This of course means these unfortunate fellows must spend most of their days in energetic country-side food-gathering … which may also explain the suntan on SM’s lower body as well as his superior physical condition.

There is also conjecture that the tools, in particular the cut down knife was used to prise oysters from their protective shells.

Pete,  Or, possibly the SM lost some of his teeth gnawing on branches of
trees, after using his muscular legs to reach the dizzy heights,
expecting to find some secret micro-writing visible on the bark?
