15 – The suicidal electrical fitter ..
Carl Webb was an electrical fitter / instrument maker, he was also beating his wife; on one occasion kicking her in the back and on another threatening her with a knife. He was a gambler who hated losing and was in the habit going into a sulk and closing himself in his bedroom as early as 7 pm on a regular basis.
His wife said he had a ‘moody disposition’ would often ignore people and be quite rude, would not speak to her for hours on end, was displeased that she had to spend money on doctor’s bills and often abused her while in a rage. She said he had no friends. The police advised her he was dangerous. He was suicidal and may have been a barbiturate addict which was not uncommon in the forties. His wife mentioned that in early 1946 he had consumed about 40 Phenobarbital tabs and had sniffed enough ether for its smell to permeate the building and alarm their neighbours in what she thought was a suicide attempt. Both of these substances were widely abused post war.
According to Abbott and Fitzpatrick, Carl Webb had deserted his wife in April 1947.
In late 1948 Webb turned up dead in Adelaide and was routinely examined by Paul Lawson as he made a bust of his head and shoulders, describing him as follows: ‘His body was very robust. Very Strong. His body a beautiful shape. A real wedge shape. Broad shoulders. Narrow hips, Well-formed legs. Obviously a man of considerable strength. Strangely enough there were no body scars or signs of hard work. The hands didn’t show any signs or callouses you would expect from handling tools. They were quite smooth.’
Electrical fitters / instrument makers handle a variety of specialised tools yet Webb had none in his suitcase, bar one screw driver and a particle brush. Similarly, an electrical fitter’s hands would show signs of his trade as over the years the inevitable work accidents leave chips and scars. Webb’s hands though were smooth, his nails trimmed and clean and his body showed no signs of hard work. Some argue that in the absence of a nail file Webb used the cut-down knife found in his suitcase to clean his nails and the scissors to trim them.
Webb’s wife was very descriptive about his violent side yet didn’t mention if he spent any time at a gym or in a regular training discipline, yet a year and a half after he deserted her Webb was found to have a physique so powerful it astounded Paul Lawson, himself a body-builder, Lawson also marvelled at the size of Webb’s hands.
A blow from either of them would have had serious consequences, particularly for a woman.
Header pic is of a modern-day range of tools as used by electrical fitters.

No scars/traces of hard work on his hands/fingers etc. Only nicotine marks. Yet he was supposed to be an Electrical fitter/Instrument maker? Was he a possible designer for electrical instruments etc. And visited various businesses to educate them/ sell new electrical equipment?

The Professor reckons the tools were likely to have been used in Webb’s trade .. like you’d hire an electrical fitter who’s kit only included one screwdriver, a cut down knife and a pair of scissors. Plus a particle brush.

Boys ‘n’ girls: Prior to becoming an electrical fitter with Sher drills, Charlie was a precision toolmaker with surgical instrument and podiatry equipment manufacturors Harley & Co. from memory. That’s likely to have been where y’man developed his state of the art hand crafted and encased auto breaking set.

Yeah, but where was his kit?

Where was it? better still where is it? remains a mystery. Could it be that his kit is still “Down in the place” (A.L. Leane ’78) along with the missing ROK and yellow handled screwdriver? Not at all likely what!

You know, if the ROK was whipped away from the police by the other men in suits then what looks like a very poor attempt at an investigation might be construed as something else entirely ..

Bit of a conundrum, isn’t it.
Doth describes her husband as having suicidal tendencies and of abusing his body with various drugs.
Yet the “bod deady” is that of a man who seems to meticulously look after his body.
If Doths husband just went to work in the morning, came home, presumably had his dinner then went to bed at 7…entertained himself with a fix or two…then how did he find the time to be a gym rat?
If SM was as physically remarkable as Lawson suggested, then he must have put some considerable effort into it…and this doesn’t square with what Doth has said about her husband.
I know I’ve been screaming this from the rooftops for a long time now…But they can’t be the same man.

John Sanders…yes. maybe us astute stinkers should make a list of all the reasons why Webb probably ain’t SM despite Derek’s DNA evidence. . (A thread for another day, Pete?)
I suppose my own contribution to the list would be….
1. The provenance of the hair sample is way too dodgy…

Guzz: sure looks like David Morgan’s hard scientific evidence, ie., a single unrooted cast hair, dubiously matched to a Keane donor, will have our case officer spitting blue chips. That’s what one gets for continuing to push the Carl = Charlie = SM barrow without the question or slightest hesitation. Far as I’m aware the only evidence ever offered suggesting possible SM – Carl Webb relativity, is that relating to Dorothy Jean Webb’s unimpeachable close blood ties to Dr. John Bennett from RAH, who rang the death nell for poor Bluey Somerton on the first day of summer 1948. Send in the CM clowns!

Same prankster for both sets, and only a day apart going by 19/20 November post dates. Be reminded that labeled pics don’t positively identify ‘Charlie’ as being one with Carl Webb.
