Only two ‘reliable’ witnesses admitted to seeing the Freeman Rubaiyat
Fully intrigued by Gerry Feltus’ admission that he was only able to find two reliable witnesses who said they saw the Freeman Rubaiyat, I did a quick flick-through of his book – The Unknown Man – and listed everyone in Adelaide who may have had an official or semi-official interest in viewing what was without doubt a prime piece of evidence.
Given the book was about events that took place in 1948/49, some of the following individuals may have died over the intervening 70 years between then and 2010, when the book was first printed. Any info of such a nature would be appreciated.
As follows:
Const. John Moss – Brighton Station.
Sgt. Lavender – Adelaide Metro.Station.
Const. W Sutherland – Adelaide Metro. Station.
Superintendent F Holmes – Adelaide Metro. Station.
James Durham – Police Photographer and Fingerprint Expert – stationed in Adelaide. #
Mounted Const. Knight –
Detective Strangeway – Glenelg Police Station.
Detective H Gollan –
Const. R Venning –
Detective Sgt. Gully –
Const. McCallum –
Detective Senior Sergeant Leane –
Inspector Ross –
Sergeant Fenwick – Glenelg Police Station.
Detective Sergeant Gill – Adelaide Detectives Office.
Constable FC Horsnell.
Constable Curtis –
Constable Storch –
Detective Sergeant McGrath –
Const. Canney –
Detective Sergeant A Evans –
Superintendent W Sheridan –
Detective LD Brown –
Senior Govt. Analyst Cowan –
Const. D Bartlett –
Professor John Cleland –
Commissioner of Police – Adelaide.
CIB Superintendent of Detectives –
Paul Lawson – Taxidermist
Const. Dunham –
Detective Noblet – Adelaide
SA Coroner Thomas Cleland.
RN Capt. Eric Nave – Naval Intelligence.
CIB Forensic OIC Dudley Aebi.
Sir Cedric Stanton Hicks.
Dr. Dwyer.
# It can be noted that Durham photographed the body three days after it was found but there is no record of him photographing the Freeman Rubaiyat or the torn page.
Old ground … https://tomsbytwo.com/2024/08/13/who-saw-the-freeman-rubaiyat/

Coroner Thomas Cleland, RN Capt. Eric Nave and Sapol CIB Forensic OIC Dudley Aebi would have to be included in those who may have seen the Freeman (?) ROK in late July 1949. And then there were those from CIS, who knows?

Couldn’t but help noting your inset pic of a younger Gerry Feltus resplendent in mock SM clobber nursing a Schooner of lousy Southwark and back to the OZ flag. All looks fine and dandy for his photo op. with Ruth Balint circa 2007. Only trouble being his Somerton Man RW & B striped tie be ass about as per the soon to be released book (cover). Are you sure he was a top detective in Sapol.

Being facetious gets their hackles up in people with no sense of humour. I know a bit about Gerry’s background, afterall we two became suits same year 1974. I seem to recall other matters he was involved with like the japanese woman who was stuffed in a wool bailer, or was that another Sapol top detective.

Then of course there was Dr. John Matthew ‘barb’ Dwyer OBE the patho and star SM inquest witness. He just might have got himself a peek at the Ruby. I once gave him a serve for puting himself up for an unearned Africa Star medal; but no doubting his well earned gong for three terms as President of the Royal Flying Doctor Service SA. Bet no punters knew about that.
