Charlie Webb here is supposed to be more than two inches taller than his brother, Roy Webb … But he isn’t.

The fair-haired gent marked here as Charlie is widely believed to be the dark-haired Charles Carl Webb aka The Somerton Man.

The Somerton Man was 5’11” in height as measured on the morgue’s slab.

The gent marked here as Roy is his brother.

Roy Webb was less than 5’9″ in height (check below)

Then there’s another member of the Webb family  ..

The fair-haired Charles Richard Webb

Thanks to Gordon C for providing the image.

Ergo: Charlie the Blonde is Richard

….. and you read it here first.

Looks as if CR Webb is about 5′ 7″?

Ok, yes, on second look it is about 5′ 9”, his NAA files states he had a scar on his back, same on his thigh/legs, had Blue eyes or Brown eyes. I wonder why his middle name isn’t mentioned on his record?

I’m sure DA will have the answer!

  4. I can’t even see him acknowledging it … all I know is that he’s been checkmated. His game is over.

Right, this is ridiculous. it’s like conservation all over again! Obviously, Carl is two steps behind. Carl Richard Webb looks nothing like the guy in the family photo, besides he is of a stockier build

    • If Carl is two steps behind his grandparents he must have bloody long arms!

…or a step behind, point is they are not at the same level.

also the difference between 175 cm -5’9 and 180 – 5’11 is 5 cm! He looks 5 cm s taller than his brother given that he is further back

        • em …. One brother has his arms around both grandparents and the other is almost touching his grandmother’s shoulder. You’re nitpicking ……

@peterbowes, if you can reproduce the photo in the same positions and with the same conditions then I might reconsider but seriously you are not on the right path. how old would crw be in 1929/30 anyway if it was him? Why would he be in the photo with his uncle Roy. not convinced.

  7. You’re a dead man Clive …

Seriously now, with Roy Webb enlisting in June 1940 (aged 35+) and RC enlisting in August 194o (aged 22 plus), perhaps the photograph commemorates their shared commitment …

  8. And it would lessen the age gap to Dorothy if so.

  9. @em, maybe you could give the photo a standard test: find someone who doesn’t know anything about the Somerton Man, like your mum or dad, whoever, show them the pic of the younger Webbs and their grandparents, make sure they can see one of younger men with his arms around both of them and the other standing shoulder to shoulder with his nan, then ask which of the young men is over two inches taller than the other.
Let us know how you go, and dude, you might give it a shot as well.

Not going to do that because it is silly. There is optical illusion and there is reality. Everyone knows that the further back you are the lower / shorter things appear to be. Carl Webb is clearly behind the three people But hey if you want to say that a stocky 13 year old teenager was there with his grandma, grandpa and uncle for some reason , then more power to you – I will let you indulge in your illusion
