24 Which of the Thomsons was responsible for Rachel’s DNA?
“Several years ago, Ms. Egan had her DNA analyzed, and links were found to people in the United States (including relatives of Thomas Jefferson). More recently, links were also found to the grandparents of the man that Jo Thomson eventually married.”
Dr. Colleen Fitzpatrick, forensic genealogist, and the man Jo Thomson eventually married was Prosper Thomson.
This statement was published in an article by the NYT on May 21st 2021 and the primary interest lies in the two words “More recently.” From this we can assume Fitzpatrick continued her DNA research on Rachel Egan’s hair sample back home in America and without the assistance of Professor Derek Abbott. It’s not known who provided the Thomson DNA sample. One might suspect Kate Thomson as she thought the whole exhumation process as being ‘macabre’ (see 60 Minutes link)
Gordon Cramer recently revived the Charles Wooley hosted 60 Minutes Somerton Man program screened in 2013 (see link) and in the last couple of seconds Rachel Egan is heard saying ‘The unidentified man is potentially my grandfather,’ well, now it seems one of the Thomson family has replaced the Somerton Man in her family tree.

The Thomson / Egan DNA link could have been the result of a fruitful coupling between Rachel’s mother and a Thomson. Perhaps this is the reason Prof. Abbott is quoted as saying ‘My head is spinning.’ And I must say I can’t blame him, some in-laws are trouble enough without this type of complication. it may also have been the reason Roma formally dissociated herself from her daughter and placed her up for adoption.
What little we do know is that Jessica became pregnant in October 1946 while working in Sydney, what we don’t know are the whereabouts of the Thomson brothers at the time.

Gaston born on 29 Jul 1920 and Quentin born on 17 Jan 1919, address was 133 Blair St, North Bondi. NAA
Blair Street, I know it well, used to catch the bus home from Bondi down there .. had a beautiful flower strip down the middle and two extremely attractive sisters living in the top floor of a flat across the road. Thanks Clive.
