Why such a reaction when Jessica saw the bust ..

Now that it appears likely the DNA Professor Abbott hoped would link his children to the Somerton man is instead linked to the Thomson family, the generally accepted reason for Jessica’s shock at seeing the cast can be put aside as Robin may well be the son of Jessica and Prosper, not Jessica and The Unknown Man.

Which brings us back to the 60 Minutes interview Stuart Littlemore had with Alfred Boxall in 1978, 30 years after event.

In 1978 the real identity of ‘Mr Francis’ was still secret, as were the identities of both Jessica and Prosper Thomson, by secret I mean the newspapers hadn’t got hold of their names in relation to the Somerton Body Case, that didn’t happen until the early 2000’s, over fifty years after the event. (Is that you breathing in the dark, Johnno?)

Media and Police: silent for so long.

Why did Stuart Littlemore, a man widely known for his independent views and legal skills, accept there had to be limitations in his interview with Alf Boxall? He was obliged to accept the piece of tape that obscured the name under the Verse 70 inscription, well, almost, I’ve little doubt the fastidious Littlemore didn’t accidentally use his elegant fingers to frame what we were not allowed to see.

Was the name ‘JEstyn’ some kind of code word used between the parties involved? For that one word to be covered up, it obviously had a strong meaning/message to more than one person. As to Jessica’s reaction to viewing the bust, was it due to her realising who the man was or,relief that it wasn’t a man she knew? The other mystery is why was Jessica asked to view the bust, when photos of the SM would have been, surely, more realistic, no matter how PL’s expertise in making the bust? Or,.had Jessica already seen photos of the SM, from newspapers, and the police wanted to gauge her reaction to an actual bust?

    • The question being here, Clive, is where did the instruction come from that resulted in one of Australia’s best known news programs obscuring the name ‘Jestyn’ in a thirty-year old case.
Once someone has got that sorted, we’ll ask them why.

Maybe Jess was unaware of the fate of Keane because Prosper didn’t tell her and seeing the bust was faced with the realisation that it was Keane and that Prosper was responsible for him winding up with a tag on his toe. To be faced with the truth in this manner would be enough to cause such a dramatic reaction me thinks.

    • Dude. Glenelg was about as big as Byron in 1970. Someone gets found dead on the beach in a place like that and everyone gets interested, except Jessica. She knew nothing. How does that work?

Jess didn’t make the connection, not until she saw the bust and that’s why she looses it. Prior to that it was just a run of the mill John Doe as far as she was concerned.

Because she realises that the John Doe was someone she knew and that Prosper was possibly responsible.

    • Thanks Dude, appreciated.

    • Someone cleaned the vomit off the dead man’s shoes and polished them nicely, right?

Wouldn’t be a proper bullshit Somerton Man theory without unnecessary flourishes like that, you gotta play to the gallery etc etc.

      • Yep, that was right after someone helped him up the stairs, shouted him a pasty, changed his duds then took him back to where they found him. Taking the mickey out of the goose who proposed that theory got me banned from BIGFOOTY for life. The hurt is immeasurable.

Keane appears at 90a Mosley to do some business with George. Jess greets him at the door and calls out for George. ” George there’s someone here about the car” Jess make polite chit chat whist waiting for George. To Jess this is just another dude in the succession of randoms who come and go doing business with George as a result of his small ads.
George leaves with Keane and Jess thinks little more of it.

Cops finding a body the next day down the beach would hardly be major news or raise any reason to make a connection. Just another John Doe who expired in a public space that happened to be close by.

However things begin to unravel months later when the ROK is located with the number and then the cops come to the door. Shes still confused about the whole matter but agreed to go and view the bust.

Then when she sees the bust and makes the connection she looses it.

Point being If the shock was genuine then its stands to reason that she was unaware that, the man who came to 90a Mosley was the John Doe prior to viewing the bust..

    Otherwise why the shock?

    • I’ve got a couple of otherwises meself. All they need is proving.

    Well its elementary,

I see no plausible reason for Jess to feign shock. Given she denied knowing Keane this would serve no good purpose other than to raise additional suspicion upon her.

If she didn’t recognise the bust there would be no reason to be shocked.

Ergo the shock was almost certainly genuine

So the shock had to either mean either she knew Keane but was unaware of his fate until that moment

Or she already knew his fate and her reaction was one of guilt and remorse.

    • I agree: the shock appeared genuine and that she knew him and was unaware of his fate. We both stand on pretty steady ground here, Dude.

But Lawsons description is that she was shocked to the point of almost passing out leaving me to be inclined to consider the former option was the cause of her reaction

Paul Lawson told me that he thought that Jessie was about to faint and, he got ready to catch her. So, with a couple of police officers also present why no follow up with her? Surely, the police must have sensed something was not quite right?

    • Clive, how good are you at ransacking the SA State Archives?
