Exhumation of the Somerton Man. We fact check a very reticent Derek Abbott’s interview with Michael Mclaren together with other related matters. Updated as it happens.

Derek Abbott was interviewed by 2GB’s Michael McLaren today (27 April) and given that accuracy is above all things regarding this mystery, particularly at this stage of its development, we thought to listen to what the PSITS* might learn from such a discussion. Derek Abbott after all is the man at the centre of the exhumation and the author of all things Somerton Man.

~

DA is strangely introduced here as being just a Somerton Man Researcher. When asked for a run down of the evening of November 30th, Abbott said the man lying by the steps was seen ‘smoking a cigarette.’

Fact check. He couldn’t have been. He had no matches. (Dare you to get into a discussion about that!)

Then Abbott goes on to say that there ‘wasn’t a scratch on him.”

Fact check. He had grazes (scratches) between the knuckles of his right hand.

DA believes the man ‘smoking a cigarette’ in the evening was the same man found dead in the morning: accepting that someone changed his trousers either before or after he ate a pasty.

McLaren then mentions the suitcase and its contents, including the Rubaiyat which, he says, was ‘with’ the suitcase.

Abbott doesn’t correct him.

McLaren mentions that DNA can be traced if there is a relative available for comparison (or words to that effect).

Abbott doesn’t mention his wife’s parentage.

That’s about it for 12:23 minutes and Abbott signs off by saying ‘Let the facts speak for themselves.’

Well, that’s what we are trying to do here Derek, Michael, and you’re not helping.

Channel 7 weighs in with a few small discrepancies.

“In December 1948, a mysterious corpse was found propped against a seawall on the Somerton Park beach, just south of Adelaide.

The man – wearing a full suit, immaculately presented but with an unlit cigarette on his shoulder – had few belongings on him, no identification and all of the tags on his clothes had been removed.” Emily Olle.

” The Advertiser can reveal Attorney-General Vickie Chapman has granted an application from SA Police Major Crime detectives to dig up the remains, buried at West Terrace Cemetery”. Goes on to say ” Major Crime detectives formally applied to AG last month for an exhumation order and it has just been granted”.

No date as yet but, “timing is subject to Major Crimes operational priorities and the availability of forensic experts”.

“Vickie Chapman states South Australia Police has since come to me with the funding and an application and I have approved it”.

Apparently, GF is quoted as saying ” If it falls flat, a lot of people will be disappointed, including myself”.

No mention of a certain professor!

“While a date for the exhumation has not yet been determined, Forensic Science SA director Linzi Wilson-Wilde said it would likely be in the “short term”, and that the remains would be transferred to a laboratory for analysis.

“It’s going to be extremely challenging in a technical sense — the remains have been buried for over 70 years and, in addition, the body was embalmed which adds further complications,” Dr Wilson-Wilde said.” ABC News

When does DA handover the cheque?

As someone clever has pointed out elsewhere: this isn’t worded as if it’s DA’s doing or on his tab.

  3. Times like this you realise how many newspapers are owned by Murdoch and they’ve all got a paywall up. Maybe Aljazerra might pick it up, I can get that for nothing.

For those behind the Murdoch wall I can tell you that Dr Linzi Wilson-Wilde from forensics SA will oversee the process who advises it will happen “sooner rather than later”

Dr Wilson-Wilde has some concert around the potential problems the embalming process may have created in extracting the DNA.

SAPOL seem to be supportive of this and are referring to it as a “case” rather than the previous attorney general Rau who saw this as nothing more than a “public curiosity”.

The rest is all background info on the case that we are all fully across.

    • The grave probably has more flowers than usual on it today. Throw us a pic if you come across one, dude, there could be a Walkley in this if done right. On another note, you could say that DNA is the body’s inbuilt micro-code.

Im on the case Pete. In fact if you go back through the archives you will see I snapped a photo at the short doco launch a few years ago that I sent your way that I believe to be the only photo with Feltus , Rachael and the professor in the one frame. Theres gotta be a Walkley in that?

Talk is that they want it to be a private and discrete so ill have to get my paparazzi on.

  7. DA no longer hoping that recovery of Somerton Man’s DNA will show that his wife is descended from SM or he would’ve rehashed the pet theory that he had for the past decade.

SAPOL now have enough DNA connections to justify exhumation on its own merits, not just at the wish of an individual. Ancestry is a wonderful thing when it works to advantage. The problem will be what DNA they can recover from the base source. If the source DNA is no good we are only a little better off, not home and hosed yet.
