Investigative lapses in the Somerton Man Case

(1) PC Moss’s failure to secure the (partly smoked) cigarette found on the body.

(2) PC Moss’s failure to find the Tamam Shud slip, later found in the fob pocket of the trousers worn by the deceased by Professor Cleland.

(3) Detective Sergeant Leane’s failure to notice the addition of a box of Bryant and May matches to the case evidence.

(4) Detective Sergeant Leane’s failure to attach any significance to the finding of a woman’s hairpin in the deceased’s suitcase.

(5) Stemming from that, Detective Sergeant Leane’s failure to re-interview Jessica Harkness – particularly after seeing her reaction to the bust – to ascertain whether the hairpin belonged to her.

(6) Detective Sergeant Leane’s failure to read and take notice of Gordon Strapp’s deposition, wherein Strapps described a marked difference in the clothing worn by the man seen alive in the evening compared to the clothing found on the body in the morning.

(7) Detective Sergeant Leane’s failure to check Adelaide incoming flight passenger lists for the 30th of November.

(8) Stemming from that, Detective Sergeant Leane’s failure to interview airport personnel and taxi-drivers picking up from the airport to the city.

(9) Detective Sergeant Leane’s failure to interview the two seamen from SS Cycle* to confirm the tools found in the deceased’s suitcase were of the type used by a 3rd Officer.

(10) Detective Sergeant Leane’s failure to obtain a medical opinion on the possible cause of the deceased’s mal-formed feet.

*The last two to view the body, thinking that he might have been a man missing from the Cycle’s crew, a Tom Read(e).
