Le Carre’s Karla puts me in mind of Kahlin compound in Darwin and sets me off on the trail of it’s former boss over the board Xavier Herbert. Alf Boxall’s ‘A’ coy Sergeant from NAOU in ’42 is still a person of interest to me, well worthy of consideration with his many professional attributes suited to murder most foul. You’re right Bozo; I mean about Karla being brought back into play for another crack..No reason not to allow a self proclaimed ‘disturbing element’ cum Oracle like my Xavier (X/O code standout) to tempt a new wave of spy shunning SM punters.

    • You always liked that bloke for it, Dusty, but without the links.

The Kensita/Army Cub mix interview quote, pharmacist by qualification, loner/wayfarer, voilent nature, drug addict, dispenser RNSH ’44/’45, lived at Mossman (Marshall), ROK fan (Methuen letter), Adelaide.est. & Advertiser pals (Kylie Tennant), city bushman habits, underground from ’49 to ’56. That and of course he was described by his two most noted biographers as a raving sociopathic lunatic. Oh another death has just been reported from Katherine Dec. ’33 where he was a well known prospector. Some old miner was found with a sheet of paper and a name with a Tennants Creek stamp upon it. They’s links to me and I can come up with a half dozen better ones if you need them.

    • Jessica Harkness – Alf Boxall – a dead man – a slip of paper – the book it was torn from – two Rubaiyats – a hotel on the harbour – a meeting in October 1946 – two tickets in his pocket – thighs like Johnny Raper. Them’s the links, Dusty, fit yours into them. If you’re into story-telling, tell us one.

Modesty prevents one, even in their seventies like ‘We’ from going too far; but old colleages in the force like Errol Caney and mentors ie. Dave Stafford (Scotland yard) Instructor of Academy class of 12/74 along with subseqyent working partners Ian McDougall DSC and Bob Moodie (both like ex Vietnam Inf.) all said ‘we’ had the makings of a fair to midling detective. After five hundred plus fraud/fp convictions ’74 through ’79 with a hundred years of Gaol time plus, sure hope I lived up to their modest expections. Supportive Commonwealth Police gazette entries along with two Commendations and a Family Court Judge’s accreditation for something or other. My eventual undoing was in standing up for my favourite 16 year old Abo. nephew who, after two weeks in the smoke from Moree, took out a pair of bad arse yug. drug dealers in Newtown ’79 which got him 12 years in an adult tank and me sent to Coventry….I detest crooks charlatans and the judicial system to this day for some inexplicable reason. Hope that’s good enough for you Bozo.

PS: Xavier, an enthusiast (Licence ’54) was most likely in Adelaide for the big air pageant of 19th November 1948 with his lifelong ANA pilot friend and famed FD/explorer aviator Percy Trezise but can’t say what they had in mind after the show.

Anyone ever spot Jessica Harkness, Alf Boxall or Johnny Raper amongst the rich and red in Packies guest book. Don’t have to look to far to find Xavier Herbert’s big bold sign on.

    • That book was as big as the Sydney phone directory … everyone had its number.

Including spymaster Woizikowski and his pommie missus Sokolova. And speaking of phone directories, the 1947 S.A. version which came out in Oct. ’46 has our Jestyn locked and loaded for Adelaide ads; so much for a Sydney conception what?..

    • That means you’ve either seen it or been told about it … right?

Seem to recall that the PMG always brought out their phone books in November of the year before which makes good sense. However Feltus would have that his 1947 edition came out towards the end of the that very same year ’47, which makes no sense at all, right?.

    • Here we go again. You’d make a fair scrum half, Dusty, elusive little blokes as I remember.
