Harkness’ two giveaways

Emotion

(1) Her reaction when she saw the bust. She didn’t faint, didn’t swoon, just swayed back then looked down while Detectives Leane, Canney and Brown questioned her.

No….    No….     No….         No.

Paul Lawson didn’t count the number of times she uttered this one word response, and neither do we know what questions she was asked.

Deflection

(2) Her reaction when confronted by Detective Canney when she opened the front door of Prosper Thomson’s home to find him standing there.

She talked, and talked and talked,

about Alfred Boxall.

Where he worked, what his service attachment was, his rank, where he lived, where he drank, where he socialised .. three year-old memories triggered by Detective Canney’s mention of a telephone number found written on a Rubaiyat.

Remarkable how Jessie, who only met with Alf on a couple of occasions could remember what street he lived on, the district etc. From 1945 to 1949 a time of 4 years-what a memory-when it suited her.

    • I think the memory suited someone else .. and its account was relayed to Harkness when the someone else got wind of her predicament.
