Alf Boxall – did he blink?

Liars blink in different ways during and after a falsehood, researchers claim.

They blink less than normal during the lie, and then have a flurry up to eight times faster than usual afterwards.

‘It is striking what different patterns in eye blinks emerged for liars and truth tellers,’ said Dr Sharon Leal, co-author of the study at Portsmouth University.

‘Such striking differences in behaviour between liars and truth tellers are rarely seen in deception research.’

The psychologists say that the discovery, reported in the Journal of Non-verbal Behaviour, means that blink rates could be used by professionals to catch liars.

Roger Dobson for The Mail on Sundays.

Liars tend to blink more because lying is stressful. Under stress, eye blink rate increases (Mann, 2013). People tend to blink more rapidly when they become nervous or when they hear or see something unpleasant (Navarro & Schafer, 2001). Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “The eyes of men converse as much as their tongues” (Nelson, A., 2010).

Alf Boxall shows great mastery in this interview in that he only had to lie once, according to Dobson and Schafer, at every other instance he turned his answer into a truthful narrative.

Go to 2:43 and run it to 9:22 – find the lie.

At 3.34? when the body on the beach is mentioned. Interesting that at 4.02 Boxall states he was the person referred to by someone in Adelaide-yet doesn’t state he knew/knows anyone in Adelaide.

      • Clive, he may have been referring to Canney’s report after he interviewed Jessica.

I wonder what Alf’s reaction would have been if Littlemore had asked Alf, to his face, if he knew anyone living in Adelaide in 1948-49? Blink rate normal or…..

    • If I was up to it, I’d time the Littlemore headshots against Boxall’s – Stuey loved the camera, pity it interfered with the interview.
