Aspects of evidence that went unnoticed by DS Lionel Leane

Detective Sergeant Lionel Leane was administrative, he drove a desk, nevertheless he was given full operational control of the Somerton Man Case.

Leane was the first responder. The case was his. So the assumption can be made that he had the pre-requisites for the job.

However ..

(1) He drew no conclusion from the absence of socks in the Somerton Man’s suitcase.

and

(2) He drew no conclusion from the absence of a pen or biro*

because

(3) He may have accepted international letters could be written in pencil.

(4) Leane drew no conclusion from the absence of a shoe polishing rag ..

(5) .. and no conclusion from the absence of a shoe polishing brush.

Similarly, when shown PC Moss’s report on the articles found on the body ..

(6) Leane drew no conclusion from the absence of matches.

However, at the Coronial Inquest ..

(7) he swore a box of matches had been found on the body.

Finally ..

When Leane became aware that Strapp’s deposition evidenced the clothing on the man Strapp’s saw as being different to the clothing found on the body ..

(8) he drew no attention to it.
