61 Interlude 4 – rebranded

undergroundYou know, you should never catch a spy. Discover him then control him, but never catch him. A spy causes far more trouble when he’s caught.

Yep. I did check to see if there might be a connection between the Adelaide Nunns and Alan Nunn May. I could not see a connection but given the problems with genealogy this is absence of evidence rather than evidence of absence. Yuck. But you know what I mean..

  3. My little bell rang when I read of AN May’s connections to Fuchs and the Manhattan Project and your mention (somewhere on CipherM) of local interest in one of the Adelaide Nunns.

one of the Adelaide Nunns lived less than 100m from where SM was found. He and his wife were naturopaths and manufactured “medicines”. Nunn and his wife had spent time in the USA (learning naturopathy) and the wife had a security file.

Pete, Osteopath/ naturopath (Douglas Arnold Nunn) lived less that 100 yards (at 15 The Esplanade, Somerton Park) from the set of steps where SM’s body was found. Douglas Nunn was married to an American and had lived in the USA for several years in the 1930s. Nunn’s Ella wife had come to the attention of the intelligence authorities (see the security file for Ella Nunn in the NAA collection). Douglas Nunn said (in a court case) that he used “… proprietary medicines containing valuable ingredients” in his osteopathy practice. So it seems he dispensed medicines and he might have even compounded formulations containing foxglove (digitalis).
Ella Mary Elizabeth Nunn nee Schrade. Born 25th March 1917 New York City, USA.
Mother: Ella Cecelia nee Murphy. Father: Oscar George Schrade. In her 1964 immigration declaration Ella Nunn gave her last overseas address as “518 Madison Avenue, Atlantic City, New Jersey.”
Douglas Arnold Nunn, was born 8th April 1916 Adelaide. Father: Phillip Edgar Nunn. Mother: Kate Ingram.
There is an interesting coincidence in that the Pharmacy in Jetty Road, close to where the discarded ROK was said to have been found, was owned by pharmacist Peter Lionel Nunn. Peter was not a close relative of the osteopathy Nunn brothers but I wonder if they might still have had a social and professional connection?
I note that DA has said that Jestyn had a life long interest in pharmacology so I wonder if she was ever employed by the osteopath/naturopath Nunn brothers? Jestyn lived at 90a Moseley Street which is 1,600 feet (480 metres) from Douglas Nunn’s house at 15 Esplanade, Somerton Park.
I feel that it might be more than coincidence that Jestyn’s uncle was a pharmacist, a pharmaceutical manufacturer, an official analyst of drugs and an expert witness in a case involving poisons. And he described himself (in electoral rolls) as a pharmacologist, at a time when pharmacologists were almost as rare as rocking horse manure.
And a final, final coincidence. Tibor Kaldor had a goitre (a thyroid problem) and I believe there is evidence to suggest that SM was hypothyroid, so there is a vague possibility that Tibor was related to SM. Thyroid problems seem to have a strong genetic component. See SNPedia for more details.

    • I’ll have a shot at it … and outflank The Dude at the same time.

On second thought, maybe Sanders can do a job on it. I think he’s running out of steam.

I’m presuming that the pharmacy was called Fisk’s, 25 Jetty Road, Manager a D’Arcy Cock. The “News” (Adelaide) 9-10-47 P3 and “The Advertiser” 10-10-47 P 16-Both mention Leslie Ingram Nunn & Douglas-for what it’s worth.

Byron and I spent a lot of time researching the Nunns…Lots of interesting stuff that, unfortunately, brought us to nothing of particular substance regarding SM’s identity. While researching, I found that Steven Thomas Ward ( ) attended Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery, in Missouri at around the same time as both Douglas Arnold and Ella Mary Elizabeth Nunn…

    But again…So?

Nothing that takes us closer to finding out who SM is.

Maybe someone else might find a connection?
