30 The investigation team: questions we would have liked to ask

Members of the team past and present are:

Detective Strangways  PC Moss and Detective Gollan. PC Sutherland and PC Horsnell, Detective Brown. DS Leane.

Picture the squad all in one room. The speaker is not one of them.

‘There’s a report of an unclaimed suitcase. Who can do it?’

‘I have it,’ said Leane.

‘Fine.’

‘Some items from the case are to be returned to the office for photographing. Who can do it?’

‘I have it,’ said Leane, ‘and the camera work as well.’

‘Fine.’

Brown lights up a cigarette.

Later.

‘It’s time to pick up the suitcase from the luggage office. Who can do it?’

‘I have it,’ said Leane.

‘Fine.’

‘The professor and analyst want to take the clothes away for a while. Who can do it?’

‘I have it,’ said Leane.

‘Fine.’

‘What are the tools for? Time we found out. Who can do it?’

‘I have it,’ said Leane.

‘Fine.’

PC Sutherland is cleaning his nails with a small gleaming instrument that hangs off his watch chain. This habit irritates Horsnell, who can’t help but stare at the procedure, hoping a slip will draw blood.

‘The stitching, is it American? Time we found out. Who can do it?’

‘I have it,’ said Leane.

‘Fine.’

Brown is squinting into the smoke of his cigarette as he wrestles with something nestled securely in his trouser pocket. He begins to tug at it.

‘Brownie?’

Brown looks up.

‘Enough.’

Brown shrugs, withdraws his hand and looks for an ashtray.

‘Someone will have to take the book off Mr Citizen when he comes in with it. Who can do it?’

‘I have that,’ murmured Leane.

‘Excellent. Anyone else think of anything else?’

‘Figuring out the code on the back of the book,’ said Leane.

‘What about it?’

‘I’ve got that covered too. Navy wallah I know.’

‘Fine.’

‘Anything else, before the lads drop off?’

‘The slip of paper is the same as the paper in the book. I found an expert who matched them.’

‘Splendid. Everything’s covered then, is it?’
