19 Did the prints taken from the unclaimed luggage match the prints taken from the body?

Let’s say the Somerton Body investigation team – under the guidance of Detective Sergeant Lionel Leane – did lift fingerprints from the hard-surfaced items found in the unclaimed suitcase, then compared them to the fingerprints taken from the deceased.

Would that be a fair assumption to make, given the standard investigative procedures in the case of a suspected murder?

Let’s say the Somerton Body investigation team – under the guidance of Detective Sergeant Lionel Leane – then decided not to release their findings.

This is when you ask yourself – WHY would they do that?

And the only logical answer I can come up with, given all the other case irregularities uncovered here, is that the prints taken from the unclaimed luggage didn’t match the prints taken from the body.

And if both sets of prints taken didn’t match, as you suggest, then the claim that the suitcase belonged to the SM would go down the toilet, and that’s something that could not have been revealed to Joe Public at any cost could it?

    • The whole edifice crumbles … and there’s more.

Or perhaps the prints did match but somebody buried the results because they wanted him to remain anonymous.

    • Then why did they send copies of his prints to every English speaking nation on earth?

  3. The man’s prints, or at least the copies we have seen, were not certificated, the fingerprint form was never signed off and there are no details on the form of the man and none of the person who took the prints. Essentially the prints could have been from anyone.

Unlikely perhaps, but if the suitcase and it’s contents were a ‘plant’-was everything carefully sanitized before being handed over at the railway station. The police were quick to link the suitcase with the SM, the thread in the suitcase and a button, no mention about his fingerprints and nobody seemed to find that odd at that time and since. A dumb question I know, but would his toothbrush had yielded anything, if tested?

    • Clive .. Why go to the bother of laying a false trail when nobody had any idea who he was in the first place? Jessica excepted.

    • Many thanks, GC, you are an indomitable resource.
According to Feltus, PC Durham did the print job at the City Mortuary on December 3 in the company of Mounted Constable Knight, who verified the body on the slab was the same as the one found on the beach.

It would be interesting to know if someone else, apart from just a group of jockeys, was on a horse that morning at Somerton Beach-how could Mounted Constable Knight make that statement?

On December 3rd 1948 in company with M.C. Knight I went to the City Morgue Adelaide, and I was pointed out a body by M.C. Knight, who said the body had been found on the Somerton beach. I photographed the body full face and side face. I produce these photographs.

  6. Another question worth asking would be what prints were sent interstate? Think about that, would the people in Sydney have accepted uncertificated prints? I don’t think so.

By the way, there was a wire facility in Adelaide and other locations throughout Australia so it is likely that the prints were wired and not a photograph.

    • That’s not how it works Pete, regardless of the ID of the person, the forms should have been certificated. You should verify that. What I have stated stands.

  7. The prints were lifted at the mortuary … the form is specific in that it asks in what prison or police station the job was done … The form also asks for the surname and christian names of the individual being fingerprinted …. in other words, there was nothing for Durham to sign off on.

Labour were finally booted out of office in SA which means attorney general John Rau looses his job. Rau rejected DA s petition for exhumation. During the previous election it was suggested that Liberal were more open to the idea and stopped short of making it an election promise but hinted it would. The change of government would have DA very excited. would suggest as this could finally be his chance. Exhumation would never have happened under Rau. Apparently the bookmakers still have a say though.

  9. If SM’s DNA matches Abbott’s wife and Jessica’s son, Robin, born July 1947, then his conception month of October 1946 looms very large … as does Alf Boxall’s home leave taken at the same time.
