the adelaide assassin

A fellow named Greg Hurwitz writes books that hurtle to their ends. Bodies everywhere with imagination and research. GH is big on research.

The Troubleshooter: I’m on Kindle page 54 and reading: “The soldiers in sniper training had square jaws and calves like footballs.” when a small globe with writing on it flickered brightly overhead.

It read waitaminute.

The Advertiser, 29 November 1948.

Mystery Somerton Find
The discovery near the water’s edge at Somerton yesterday of a man’s three-piece suit, sports trousers, a shoe, several pairs of socks and an overcoat is being investigated by police. With the clothing was a rifle stock without a barrel. The articles appeared to have been in the water for some time.

~~~
Then there are these.
~~~

.. and this:

Government analyst, James Cowan, shook some black powder from the brush (above) but was was unable to identify what is was.

~~~
Have we found SM’s missing socks?
Was the black powder, gunpowder?
Were the tools used to arm and prime bullets?
Was the rifle barrel removed because of its distinctive sight / scope fittings?
… and Prosper, what did he want with a rifle?
Ina Harvey’s man, was that a cleaning rod in his empty rifle break-down case?
    Gordon: The old Vic. Strathalbyn, Coopers Ale,
    Leon Leane’s favorite haunt when making discreet local inquiries with Stan Swaine of Beaumont fame. Nothing to hide there mate.
  2. That’s a tidy deflection, JohnS, and in less words than usual. Can Tho is beginning to agree with you.
      Only because I couldn’t id the guns and I’m really pissed. Prosper only wanted a Win.62 and you’re trying to sell him something out of a Jules Verne novel. Ever had a Coopers pale at the Vic.?. Me neither.
  4. Ah. JS, but there is still a hidden message in the photograph, surely a man of your calibre would be sharp enough to find it 🙂
    What happened to the suitcase supposed to have been dumped on the beach? The objects found in the railway suitcase are photographed on an interesting background pattern-could be ‘mighty helpful’?!
    • So would a few pics of Tibor’s carry-ons be useful. Lots of stray luggage around about that time.
    Should have picked the plain yank stock but that side lever stumped me. Similar to the 03 & 05 Win. in some ways but not nearly as pretty.
    • I’m looking at two pictures, one is of a flute case, the other a rifle case, the ones used for rifles that come in two parts.
      Ina had only one to choose from, she should have channelled BD.
        I think I’ve got it, but what about the aboriginal face on the rough wall adjacent…Notice how the piece of tin plate has some sort of frizzled edges like a well fried egg. Seems that it comes from a molten metal ore sample being set in a tobacco can for assaying purposes. Do we know anyone that is involved in prospecting for tin. Yup!
    Don’t know about the barrel though being fairly heavy it probably worked its way down through the shifting tidal sands. Those pencils Alexandria and Royal Sovereigns were made by the same Kosher company. Had a friend that worked for Jews and he maintains that as a rule they will go out of their way to buy things produced by their own folks. I’m with Gordon on the tie which is for Hay internment camp; 4 being Tatura and 14 Loveday, all of which are still very much in the game. …also we have 7 days to solve the Victoria’s Secrets code.
