The code overwrites, updated.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Why is there a difference in technique in the overwriting of the R and the P ?

Why wasn’t the R subjected to the same secondary broad-brush overlay as the P?

What do the bars within the P overlay signify?

From Nick Pelling:

… it looks as though at least two different detectives added it (the first one was very heavy-handed with the laundry pen so it ended up looking blobby, while the second one had a much lighter/smoother touch etc); or that a previous detective seems to have tried using a pencil to overwrite the indentations on the Rubaiyat itself before realizing that this was a completely stupid idea.
