the flute player, updated

Ina Harvey’s recollection of a fellow with a flute case sitting in her hotel lobby for a few days at about the time of SM’s death didn’t go down well with GF and Prof Abbott claimed she was a grandstander.

Ina remembered a professional type of fellow, a man who ‘certainly didn’t murder the King’s English.’ Though she said at some stage he appeared tired, distraught, and when he left he said she will never see him again.

Sounds like Tibor Kaldor to me.

All the way down to his flute case,

and suicide note.

Who was he waiting for?

Tibor Kaldor’s Windsor address was registered to a music teacher, a Miss Brown.*

Hi Pete, Ina’s reported words keeps coming back to me: “He had a general air of refinement. I thought he was a professional man. When he spoke, his grammar was correct and lucid. Good looking-he wasn’t but there was an air of distinction about him” (GF’s book) The more you think about Ina’s words, and look at Tibor’s photo, the more this man seems to be one and the same.

    • All we need is a pic of Tibor holding a flute … that should be enough, Clive, you reckon?

A Hungarian flute player? Not many of them around in Adelaide in 1948 I daresay!

    • Perhaps not, but we know there were a couple at Tatura camp; a sophisticated lot those international communists, fond of music and literature, implacably opposed to the fascists in their midst.

Hi Pete, If you input ‘Tatura camp band’ on the net, it should show ‘Performance by Camp Band- 10 June 1943’, click, and a photo appears of the band. Dr Gruber (bandleader) is standing, look at the man sat down just to the left side of Gruber. Interesting?

  4. Can you post a link to the photo Clive/Pete? I can’t find it. The only thing that comes up is GC’s site.

  5. Exceptionally good follow through Pete. On a musical note, it might be worth re-examining the ‘letters’ of the code page?

    • …. or is it the physical disposition of an orchestra, with the conductor X front and centre.
