the one glove that fits both hands

John Ruffles was interviewed by Stuart Littlemore for ABC-TV in 1978.

The Somerton Man.

” .. the Eastern European refugee immigration to Australia was at its peak and quite a few of these Baltic migrants were being used in the construction of the Woomera rocket base.

It’s a very hard thing to say whether he was a Russian spy or British Intelligence officer or a British Defence scientist who turned traitor to his country, or if he was an American Intelligence officer who’d been bumped off by the other side because this was the peak of the cold war….

… Now my theory is that, and this again is only guesswork, perhaps he’d been captured just after he discarded the book, taken to some place for interrogation, strong armed, not beaten but injected with some truth drug. Sodium Pentathol for instance which I gather would be some form of barbiturate in its form anyway.

An overdose was administered ….”

Tibor Kaldor.

The Eastern European internee immigration to Australia was at its peak and quite a few of these Baltic migrants were being used in the construction of the Woomera rocket base.

“It’s a very hard thing to say whether Kaldor was a Russian spy¬†because this was the peak of the cold war….

… Now my theory is that, and this again is only guesswork, perhaps he’d been taken by the secret service just after he arrived, removed to a hotel room for interrogation, strong armed, not beaten but injected with some truth drug after being told to write his last will and testament. Sodium Pentathol for instance which I gather would be some form of barbiturate in its form anyway.

An overdose was administered.

Uncanny, isn’t it?

Kaldor’s suicide note.

Tibor Kaldor was an internee with (suspected) connections at the Woomera rocket range and was found dead in an Adelaide hotel room, poisoned by a barbiturate two weeks after the Somerton Man was found murdered on an Adelaide beach.

It is a well-considered possibility that the Somerton Man was also an internee.

Less considered is that the Somerton Man was responsible for alerting the authorities to Kaldor’s arrival while being subjected to the same treatment.

Perhaps they were sharing documents if one was a spy and one was the helper. SM’s death was right out there where everyone could see him as opposed to Tibor’s which was in a private room. The very public nature of SM’s death was sending a message to somebody. And around the corner from her home….I wonder who.

I guess authorities were alerted that a spy had landed when SM showed up but they soon realized he was not who they were looking for after they interrogated him. They then propped him up as a decoy but Jessica et. al. didn’t take the bait or were uninformed. What if part of SM’s interrogation involved his writing his own suicide note but they saved it and had Tibor sign it. It might have been the clue to look for a larger suitcase at the train station.

  2. Knowing who Mr Francis was would be helpful.

Then there is the tantalizing clue about the dumped suitcase, a kid called Prusinski on a motor bike from Broken Hill. Could there be two suitcases?

  4. Pete – How was Tibor connected to Woomera??? (I missed that.) Also, is there any way that you could post high res images of Tibor’s letter?

  5. Misca – not all internees were confined behind wire for the duration of the war. Those released as non-threatening were conscripted into domestic army units, others with engineering and mechanical skills were employed in all manner of industries, including those that played a part in the manufacture of weapons and aircraft in South Australia.
Gordon has some better quality pics on his site.
PS: I added an adjective, suspected, doesn’t do to misrepresent the fellow.
